Do you like the beret? I think it's a fantastic hat. Claudette Colbert captured that great daredevil quality the beret has, like it's always on the brink of falling off someone's head. "It is no accident, surely, that she flourished at that most European of studios, Paramount, home of Ernst Lubitsch and Maurice Chevalier, Rouben Mamoulian, Josef Von Sternberg and Billy Wilder. Her distinctive high-cheekboned beauty and the throaty individuality of her voice were complemented by superb comic timing and fine technical skill honed by an extensive apprenticeship in the theatre. She could be warmly compassionate in romantic drama but was unsurpassable in sophisticated comedy. Many of her Thirties comedies with titles like 'I Met Him In Paris' and 'She Married Her Boss' are minor trifles elevated by her presence, and at least three of her comedies, 'It Happened One Night', 'Midnight' and 'The Palm Beach Story' are among Hollywood's greatest ever. It is a mark of the respect in which she was held by film-makers that throughout her career sets were built and scenes directed in order to favour the left side of her face, since she was convinced that her right profile was unflattering."

I think hats are great. There isn't enough style in todays dress to wear hats which is a shame.

They just look funny on me but that could be because they aren't worn much. I looked up types and an Akubra is very nice also. Hats need to come back in style. Seriously

Hats need to come back in style. Seriously I agree. For one thing, they're very cinematic. It's hard to imagine film noir without hats, dames, bourbon and cigarettes.

While we're discussing fedoras, the Australian Akubra company really makes nice, quality fur felt hats at an affordable price. Trust me on their affordability, when compared to a lot of hats near that price point that are made of lesser quality, wool felt rather than fur (usually rabbit, hare, and even with beaver or nutria). I own several Akubras of various styles, and they're both fun and practical to wear, as well as nice looking. I have received many compliments for them, so a lot of people like brimmed hats, or the idea of wearing one or seeing others with one, but they are not common at the moment.
As for berets, they can be nice, but I don't own one. I used to have one over a decade ago, but it was hardly worn. They get a lot of flack from military personnel, but they also command respect as well. For civilians, I think berets are most effectively worn with an early 20th century dress sense; suits, sports jackets or otherwise nice looking casual jackets, chinos and wool trousers, nice shoes, boots, and shirts, etcetera. They can be worn with jeans, as well.

Nice pictures. Berets looked great on women in classic era films,--as in more than fifty years ago and counting--though I can't see them coming back today.
Berets were popular as men's wear for a few years there during the beatnick period, Fifties mostly.

As the story goes, JFK "killed" the hat as a part of men's fashion, whether fedora or any of the various kinds of ""dress hats", though frankly I think they were on the way out anyway postwar, just as the mustache was. I like those old style men's hats, can't see them coming back, though. As to men's hats specifically I think they're too "all male", the old kind, I mean, and that they'd look out of place in the era of women's empowerment. It's like their time came and went. Funny lines in old movies: "hold onto your hats, boys", often spoken in a newsroom when a really big story was about to break. Or, when someone's been summoned, in a hurry, "I'll get my hat and come with you..." or whatever. The implication is always that a man has a hat nearby, and that if he's going someplace important he'll need one.

I never thought of the general demise of the Hollywood hat in terms of female empowerment but you make a powerful and cogent point. So many things have changed now; smoking is being all but eradicated from the silver screen and the e-cigarette has yet to catch on. Hats became symbolic in cinema and sometimes signified luck (including the bad variety). The trilby is another good gangster hat that proved versatile.

Truly, Petro, I was thinking of Mel in my first post on hats, didn't mention him but he was on my mind, and thenyou [/i] you posted the Dick Miller pic and dang if he doesn't look like he could be Mel Ferrer's brother.

I like the beret, the pillbox and the tam. They make a nice finish to an outfit, in a "minimal" way.
I think that I might have (at least) one of each in the back of my closet shelf. I'll have to look.
