like The Avengers movie was?
This is not a troll thread, I'd really like to hear some speculation on this.
My take on it is that there were no "firsts" and it was too little too late.
1. Not the first superhero team-up movie. 2. Not the first Justice League appearance. The JL had already appeared in live action in BvS.

Um, cause it's a really shitty movie coming on the back of another shitty movie (BvS) and rabid fanatics aside, nobody cares about the DCEU anymore?

I think lack of confidence caused by the troublesome production. The directors swap after a badly received BvS. Two captains on one ship. Second captain does extensive reshoots but the release date wasnt changed. Other movies being cancelled, postponed or have its director changed. The DCEU is a mess. And that scares people of.

Three controversial disappointments and only one well-liked film leading up to it. That's what happened.

I think because it is rushed and there was barely any buildup with it.

If they had moved it away from Ragnarok, it might have helped. But I kept arguing Whedon needed more time. They needed to move it out to make a better product

Rotten tomatoes BS and all the anti-dc threads (on here and many other sites) before the movie even came out messed up this movies chances. If people were to actually SEE this movie they'd see it's actually a lot of fun. This is a good movie that got trashed by bad word of mouth. Same thing with Blade Runner 2049. That movie is sheer fucking brilliance and it got trashed by people saying it was boring, which it is not. On the other hand Thor got a great boost from good word of mouth. And its not really any better. Its just funnier. These things happen.

Dude, there isn't one person using this message board that was put off seeing JL because of "anti-DC" threads. Get real! DCEU fanatics and CMB fans will watch the movie whatever. It's the general audiences staying away because they hated BvS and SS that killed it. And if the movie is "a lot of fun," like you say it is then surely good word of mouth will save it? A good movie isn't going to be trashed by bad word of mouth. The truth of the matter is that it's a bad movie that you would rightly be hating on if it was made by the MCU. And you really shouldn't be comparing Blade Runner 2049, a high budget art house movie whose director was able to execute his vision perfectly, with a Frankenstein's monster of a movie like JL. Justice League is really poorly executed lowbrow entertainment that hasn't connected with general audiences.

How else do you explain BvS making 160+ and this making 90+ opening weekend? People made up their minds about this movie BEFORE it even came out.
And good word of mouth has never saved a movie. At best it gives a movie some legs in the box office. Using Blade Runner 2049 again as an example, reviews for that were shining and it still flopped. VERY few movies start off low and actually have better 2nd or 3rd weeks. Come on man, you know that. JL is unfortunately already a sinking ship.
But when people come around to seeing this on DVD they will see how much fun it was.

I'm tellin' ya', bad word of mouth. If the consensus is that the previous DC movies were meh, and this one got such bad criticism, why would anyone bother to go see it? I get it.
Its too bad that people don't always make up their OWN minds. If they did they would go see a pretty fun movie. This and Blade Runner 2049 are my biggest WTF moments in movies this year.

Well, if you had as many issues with the previous installments of the series as myself and others do, would you feel as inclined to go see this one? Apart from that, I didn't like what I saw in the trailers.

Those general audience members who were undecided may have been put off by the RT shenanigans. What you don't seem to be taking into account is the fact that most general audience members aren't huge movie fans. They don't spend time scouring the Internet for information. They aren't going to know about the mess that has gone on behind the scenes. All they are going to know is what they thought of BvS and SS and maybe the RT score. It failed on opening weekend because people haven't been enjoying the DCEU movies. WW opened with $103 million and went on to be the top grossing domestic movie of the summer. Why? Because general audiences enjoyed it and told their friends. That opening weekend figure is only $9 million more than JL's opening weekend figure so if general audiences find the movie as much fun as you think they will then there is no reason it won't gross over $300 million, at least.

It was never going to be the kind of event that TA was for the simple fact that it came more than 5 years later.

No, I guess I wouldn't, but one thing I do get a lot from even the negative reviews is that this movie is different from the others and "a step in the right direction". So maybe that should've been enough to have people give it a chance. In any case, whats done is done.
