Spielberg is over rated. So is Lucas. Woody Allen. I watched "To Catch a Thief" yesterday which was directed by Hitchcock and although the scenery was nice the film itself was very ordinary. Some of his quirks like not liking eggs which he referenced twice in the film just came across as immature as well.

I never thought I would find any Woody Allen films that I thought were great ... I finally found 1 out of 20 ... Broadway Danny Rose. Now I don't hate everything he directs ... just almost everything.
Woody Allen (20 films seen ... ranked in order) 8 Broadway Danny Rose (1984) 6 The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) 6 Small Time Crooks (2000) 6 Cafe Society (2016) 6 Sleeper (1973) 5 Bananas (1971) 5 Deconstructing Harry (1997) 3 Bullets Over Broadway (1994) 3 Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) 3 Blue Jasmine (2013)
3 Mighty Aphrodite (1995) 3 Annie Hall (1977) 2 Everything ... Sex (1972) 2 Everyone Says I Love You (1996) 2 Love and Death (1975) 2 A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982) 2 Irrational Man (2015) 2 Celebrity (1998) 2 To Rome with Love (2012) 1 Zelig (1983)

Mia Farrow is great in that. You should check out Sweet an Lowdown also. It's pretty funny.

Wes Anderson.
I don't mind The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, but everything else I don't care for. His style, although obviously talented, just doesn't do it for me film wise.

robert altman is really not that great, he threw out the script, had his actors make up stuff to talk about, predictable result: most of the dialogue is inane chatter
people say MASH is a great war movie, but not really a war movie at all, 90% of it could have been set on a college campus, kids playing pranks on each other

Martin Scorsese. I have never seen a film of his I wanted to see a second time.
But I do love listening to him talk about films.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I must have mental issues, then, as I continue to watch each new Wes Anderson film and expecting it to be good. I fall for those great, worshipful reviews by critics who've proclaimed him a genius every time. They have to be right at least once, right? Silly me.

Have to agree and add Tarantino and Peter Jackson. Especially Tarantino, never seen the big deal about his films.

I don't know if any of these are actually considered great directors though. Wes Anderson Richard Linklater Jean-Pierre Jaunet The only director who is semi-respected that I hate is Baz Luhrmann but he certainly isn't considered a great director.

Tarantino for sure. Loathe is a strong word, but I pretty much loathe his movies.
I find Nolan's work cold, heartless, and cruel, without human feeling or emotion. The only picture of his of which I'm an unapologetic fan is The Prestige.
I do like Altman and Scorsese, though it took me a while to warm up to the former. I still think the first Altman picture I saw, Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson, is an overelaborate, unfunny mess (despite a stellar central performance from Paul Newman), but Altman's swan song, A Prairie Home Companion, is one of the warmest, sweetest pictures I've ever seen--and all the more powerful for its lack of a Hollywood ending.
