Yup suppression is the worst way to stop something happening. Honestly humanity is thick as shit, we saw this with prohibition as well. Why can't we learn as a species?

Unbelievable. After all these years since the disease broke out first among IV drug users, then the overlap into the gay community, the contamination of the blood supply before the antigen was identified, purely heterosexual transmission in Africa, children being infected by mothers infected by their husbands who acquired it from female sex workers... and people still think HIV is a gay disease. The ignorance and stigma is still there. Viruses don't care what your gender identity is, all the virus needs is a transmissible environment. It's a virus that hides in white cells so transmission must be sealed blood-to-blood contact or sealed blood (or semen)-to-mucous membrane. And of course religion would rather let people risk transmission of a deadly virus than talk about safe sex practices.

They should give out condoms to give them the chance to reject using them like the rest of the planet.

The problem is, it became more easily transmissible through unprotected anal sex and this is where the gay community copped the stigma. HIV does not mean full blown AIDS, but it is very important to be protected, if one is having numerous partners and anal sex is engaged in. Iran and it's bigoted religious ignorance regarding homosexuality is just not going to be addressed in the manner that it should. They can't keep burying their heads in the sand, but they will continue to punish homosexuality whenever they see fit. Again, this isn't about homosexuality; yes, it transmits more easily in that setting of sexual practices, but it is transmissible in heterosexual settings, too. IMHO, everyone needs to see the HBO movie, On a personal note, a young woman I knew from a grief support group was HIV positive; her drug-injecting husband acquired the virus first and passed it to her. While the outbreak in the USA was made more prominently about gay transmission, because it was a higher profile community, the actual outbreak started among IV drug users sharing needles, a low profile community that had overlap with the gay community. While this current issue in Iran may again emphasize homosexual transmission, the truth of the science is that it is spread through many kinds of sexual and medical contact.

Never even heard a priest speak out against birth control. I recall a leader of the Catholic church insisting condoms weren't the right approach to preventing the spread of AIDS as late as 2009. www.nbcnews.com/id/29734328/ns/world_news-africa/t/pope-condoms-not-answer-aids-fight/#.WiBHwEqnE2wI can't figure out if you're actually unaware of the Catholic church's history re- prophylactics or you're just limiting the comment, in your mind, to anecdotal encounters on your own part. Right up to 1968 the Catholic Church was straight up saying it was intrinsically wrong to use protection. It's the whole basis behind the "Every Sperm is Sacred" sketch in "The Meaning of Life".

Never even heard a priest speak out against birth control. Have you heard of this dude called the Pope and 'encyclicals'? The fact that most people ignore his advice in the Western world, whilst those in Africa are refused condoms and die of HIV men women and children, just adds to the otherwise 'unblemished' face of the Catholic Church...right?

You *were* referring to anecdotal individual encounters on your part. Hence my confusion. You were aware of the Catholic Church's stance on this stuff though, yes?

Again, this isn't about homosexuality; yes, it transmits more easily in that setting of sexual practices, but it is transmissible in heterosexual settings, too. I believe it is about homosexuality, because HIV is more easily spread through the act of anal intercourse. This is the why there would be an issue in Iranian youth and HIV, as they would be engaging in an unprotected sexual practice and are also told it is a sin at the same time, sue to religious dogma. It is about education and protection. I am not stigmatizing homosexuality by saying this, just quoting a well known fact.
Not once did that article mention about homosexual practices and talks about how it is forbidden to have sex before marriage and drug use. It is sweeping the main cause under the rug, because homosexuality is forbidden in Muslim dominated countries. The article is half truths, twisted lies and therefore almost fake news. Typical!
A lesser-known fact is that if you don't make the decision to become a sodomite, your chances of contracting HIV go way down. And I don't give a damn about stigmatizing homosexuality.

Nobody makes the decision to become a sodomite, just as you didn't make the decision to become an ignorant clown. It is inherent in you.
No-one cares about what you give a damn about, you closeted fruit cake.
Homosexuality is not going to go away, it is not a sin in eyes of the lord or Allah, and these Muslim dominated societies need to stop living in the dark ages. You need to get your head out of the sand also.
Really? Nobody makes the decision to become a sodomite? Then who makes the decision for them?
