BATouttaheckThanks! about The Man Who Came for Dinner, Bette is very sweet in this movie, and if things couldn't get crazy enough, there is also an old murderess in the old family. There is a Hallmark TV version from 1972, but that one I've never seen:

teleadmWhen I was looking for the images from the Wooley version, I saw the ones with Orson. Can imagine that he'd be a terrific Sheridan. YouTube has a whole pile of videos but they don't seem to have the Welles one. Drat !

Lacey Chabert was one of the Mean Girls (2004), and like costar Lindsay Lohan, that was the peak of her success. Hardly, the peak of her success. Lacey Chabert played Claudia Salinger, the youngest of five orphaned siblings on the TV show Party of Five from 1994-2000, a period of six years. During that series, she won or was nominated for 8-10 best young actress awards. It's hard to remember that little annoying Claudia blossomed into the sexy Lacey Chabert we know today. I sort of think of them as two separate beings.

teleadm Thanks so much for reminding me about this cure for the dreaded Bah, Humbugs ! What a fun FUNNY movie it is. Noticing the historical references and the Hats and fur coats just added to the joy. Bette Davis was a delight and she was not her tightly wound "Bette Davis" character. I'm glad you noticed that and pointed it out. It's among Davis's more relaxed and least mannered performances, and is a film to I like to cite as an example of her willingness to take a back seat to other performers when they should properly dominate, reflecting her director-like understanding of dramatic balance and emphasis for the good of the show. The Great Lie (1941) and June Bride (1948) are a couple of others. The play's the thing!

Doghouse6 Not to wander too far afield (as if that would ever happen) BUT, I wish that Bette had stayed Bette who presented characters and not become BETTE. I much prefer her in roles where she plays someone other than Bette Davis. Another tangent deals with Ann Sheridan and her filming "Man/Dinner" and "King's Row" simultaneously. Themes for another time and place but you know how these "trains of thought go". Gotta self de-rail this one STAT !
Jimmy Durante as BANJO ! Over the Top ? Just a Tad but so so Jimmy !

I never did see her after Party of Five ended so I still have the image of her as a self-centered little whiner who did eventually mature and took on some semblance of a mature person.

Everybody wants to live how they wanna live and everybody wants to love like they wanna love and everybody wants to be closer to free...! Gotta love how a bah humbug thread like this is morphing into a Party of Five appreciation thread.

Gotta love how a bah humbug thread like this is morphing into a Party of Five appreciation thread. I had no idea what I was opening up back on Page 1 with the innocent question, "And just who the hell is Lacey Chabert, anyway?" Looks like I got told!

ANYTHING that gets the thread away from bitchin' and moanin' about The Holiday's is an improvement. What's a Party of Five ? and why wasn't I invited ?

What's a Party of Five ? and why wasn't I invited ? Because then it would have been a party of six...and they were probably out of eggroll.

It was this delightfully depressing FOX show in the 90's about five siblings who got orphaned and ran a restaurant when their lives weren't hitting the skids. It was no 90210 wannabe, the acting and stories were really great. I missed a lot of it, but it is on the Netflix.

Since the WH Lawn is pretty flat, I wonder : how do you suppose they even rolled the eggs ? Doghouse6
Another burning question : are there any egg rolling scenes in Classic Films ?
If they can put Christmas Trees in the stores before Halloween, I can ask Easter Movie questions in the Christmas Bah Humbug thread and beat the crowds come spring.

Oh, they're old hands there. Sooner or later, everything and everyone gets rolled in Washington, D.C.

Yesterday, I learned (on the FunTrivia web) that the word "humbug" means "a lie", or "a falsehood". Which probably means that Scrooge was not a believer in Christmas at all.
Considering the commercialism and the utter phoniness of this season, maybe ol' Ebenezer was right after all!

For Heaven knows how many years, people have been brainwashed into believing that the Christmas season is the time of never-ending merriment, family togetherness, love and good cheer. And spending themselves into debt buying gifts! I admit, the colored lights and decorations are pretty, but then there is the endless Christmas music piped into all the stores, plus the movies and TV shows on the subject, especially the 24/7 puke-a-thon from Hallmark Network that lasts from before Halloween until after New Year's Day! In truth, so many people are stressed out and depressed during this time. Regarding "family togetherness", no thought has been given to those who either have no families or those whose families are so dysfunctional that gatherings are impossible without quarreling and hatred. In fact, more murders and suicides occur during the Christmas season than any other time of the year (except, maybe, summer). IMHO, the only people who enjoy this seasons are the wealthy moguls who own the emporia that put ordinary mortals in debt each year. BTW, the only Christmas movie I really love is the 1950 version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, with the brilliant Alistair Sim as Scrooge. Hey, snsurone! We never agreed with each other very much on the old Boards, but I am with you 100% on this one. The commercialization -- and lack of true meaning -- of Christmas is disgusting. And, yes, it is a time when many are unhappy, depressed -- and plunged into debt. The media would have us think that all problems melt away just because it's December 25th. I'm also with you on Alistair Sim, a master actor! Happy Chanukah!

Hi, Gubbio.
Yes, we did have a falling out on the old boards, mostly because of our disagreements regarding I LOVE LUCY, and Ricky's treatment of Lucy.
But I'm happy to see you back here on the new boards, and I thank you for your holiday wishes. I extend them to you; may you have a happy holiday season.

Something to be noted :
BY the end of the movie, Ebenezer Scrooge had gotten over his miserly and Bah-Humbuggy ways and was "into" the Seasonal Traditions and Festivities.
As can anyone who CHOOSES to do so... even if not visited by three ghosts.

As can anyone who CHOOSES to do so... even if not visited by three ghosts. Something else to be noted: When the novel was written, Christmas was a truly merry and festive religious holiday. Totally unlike the selfish, greedy, stressful, commercial farce it is today.
