There was a moment on "Say Yes," tonight's installment of THE WALKING DEAD, wherein Rick and Michonne are discussing the future and imagining the downfall of Negan's order. Someone, Michonne suggests, is going to have to be in charge of reordering the world of the survivor communities."It should be you," she tells Rick. "You can do it. You'd be good at it." Rick, of course, has never shown himself to be "good at" much of anything in TWD's long run. One of show's tropes is that the writers, perpetually lost in the fever of Idiot Plot Syndrome, always show Rick to be entirely incompetent then, to justify his continuing position as leader, try to do an end-run around their own bad plotting by having the other characters constantly talking about what a great leader he is. Don't believe your lying eyes! Immediately after Michonne suggests he's cut out to be Maximal Leader, the writers give us another look at Rick's typical leadership skills. He and Michonne, out scavenging for guns and supplies, have happened upon what appears to be an old county fair that, when the world was falling apart, was apparently used by the military as some sort of base of operations. Everyone there, soldiers and civilians alike, are long dead but the many soldier-zombies are still toting their weaponry. Jackpot! But there are probably over a hundred zombies inside the fairground. Does Rick high-five Michonne and return home to collect some extra muscle to take the place? Nope. He decides he and Michonne will try to take on this army of the dead all by themselves. Clearly, the guy who should be running the world.[1] The discovery of the fairground, which also came with tons of still-boxed-and-shrink-wrapped MREs, was another magic-trick by the writers who, having wasted over half this season on filler material, are now jamming in these huge, paradigm-altering discoveries one after another. When last we saw Rick, he'd cut a deal with the Garbage People (who were another magic trick); if Rick could arm them, they'd fight with him. Presto! The next time we see Rick, he's finding exactly what he needed, and no one from any of the communities, all of whom have been scavenging throughout this area for something approaching two years, have ever come across it! Other than being just what they needed, the site doesn't make a lot of sense either. There are shell-casings scattered around that suggest there was some sort of ferocious fight yet the perimeter fences appear to be entirely unbreached and most of the soldier-zombies are walking around with their weapons conveniently slung and holstered, as if they somehow died without having used them at all. Bored to death while on guard duty? One of the mysteries of TWD..... The rest is here: cinemarchaeologist.blogspot.com/2017/03/walking-dead-90.html

Hey jriddle. I like the new Jonah Hex avatar. I was thinking the exact same thing about, well most of what you posted but especially the magic way the weapons and MRE's (oops whatever name they changed the packaged meals to) conveniently appeared. I was trying to think of even a lame reason the soldiers were all killed while still having their weapons and ammunition and couldn't.
Much less why they were at a podunk carnival or really anything about the entire scenario. Also why even bother with nonsense like faking that Rick is having his guts gobbled by zombies? Does that give even the most simple minded viewer pause?

But he talked about the deer! He talked about the deer, Lori!
I actually don't have a problem with the scene at the carnival/base. It looks like it happened very early in the outbreak, probably before people realized that dying means turning, even without a bite. All it would take is one person dying in their sleep or some other unexpected way, and you've got another outbreak inside the perimeter. Then a handful of the living could have tried fighting their way out, thus explaining the casings, as well as the zombie jammed into the windshield of what was probably their escape vehicle.
There are lots of ways that scenario could have been created.
What does bug me is the sloppy writing. And yeah, they've been scavenging for weeks since Negan arrived, and never found any jackpot...but suddenly Penis Head Lady of the Scavengers wants guns, so Rick and Michonne stumble upon military-trade weaponry.

They better keep some for themselves because I don't trust them at all!

I did like that moment when Michonne thought Rick was dead. We all knew that Rick was not gonna die, but *she* didn't know that.

The various communities have been scavenging in the area for nearly two years. There are, of course, going to be plenty of things they haven't yet found but this was a magic trick, no other way to see it. And led there by a magic deer.

Much less why they were at a podunk carnival or really anything about the entire scenario. Yeah, it didn't exactly seem like the best place for the military to establish some sort of post, did it? And they'd taken prisoners, as several of the zombies in a cluster had their hands ziptied in front of them. Were they made prisoners after they were already zombies or before and they all just somehow died that way without leaving that same location (their feet weren't tied) or sustaining head trauma? TWD's creators should give out no-prizes for explaining such things. I'd already be owed a pile of them.

Jriddle, I've been going back and reading your blogs. There's some really good stuff there! I used to love this show and look the other way at a lot of its faults. Then it was a guilty pleasure. Now I have to totally disengage my brain to watch, and it's less than pleasurable. Every point you bring up rings a bell and I pretty much agree with it all. So why do I still watch?

Sure, it's all true: Terrible writing, nonsensical plots, too much "magic", zero character development, etc...

Sure, it's all true: Terrible writing, nonsensical plots, too much "magic", zero character development, etc... I can say that I've enjoyed the wackier stuff in the back half of this season. It has been drawing little bits and pieces from Z NATION since ZN appeared but it's becoming a more regular feature in the last few eps. It's certainly a big improvement from all those years when it was so relentless in its utter humorlessness. Someone really needs to cue their editor in on the joke though. When he cuts scenes like the zombie lawnmower or the runaway car, he's still cutting it the way he does everything else. To me, this makes those moments even more funny but to most people, I suspect it's going to look either incompetent or make viewers think the creators are unaware that the scenes are stupid. --- "The Dig" cinemarchaeologist.blogspot.com/

--- "The Dig" cinemarchaeologist.blogspot.com/I think it is a lot of both!! We need to add banjo music and slide whistles to the sound track!
