Just to clarify, the actors themselves don’t necessarily have to be Irish...just the characters they play. Having said that^, two of my favourite Irish characters happen to be played by Irish actors. Allen Francis Doyle (played by Glenn Quinn) from the TV series Angel. John Mitchell (played by Aidan Turner) from the UK version of the TV series Being Human. And then, of course, there’s the characters who aren’t played by Irish actors. James Erle "Jimmy" Malone (played Sean Connery, not even trying to do an Irish accent) from the 1987 movie The Untouchables. Morrigan (played by Tamara Gorski, not doing much better with her Irish accent) from the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

Eilis, in BROOKLYN, played by Saoirse Ronan. A beautiful performance in a lovely movie. And both are Irish.

For whatever reason, the first character to come to my mind is Nicholas Clay’s Irish-accented Patrick Redfern in Evil Under the Sun (’82). He’s a lot of fun in the role; the whole cast hams it up appropriately. Clay with co-star Jane Birkin. More seriously, let me reiterate BATouttaheck ’s recommendation of the entire cast of The Quiet Man and then add two more Barry Fitzgerald roles: Father Fitzgibbon from Going My Way (’44) and Judge Quincannon from And Then There Were None (’45) Ahh, and Henry Gibson’s Reilly O'Reilly, from Disney telefilm The Luck of the Irish (2001). Then again, I think the reason I like the character is that he reminds me of a family-friend, who has a German name but looks as Irish as a leprechaun: Probably a few more if I set my mind to it.
