Note: this only includes films he directed. It does not include films written by him but directed by others. I hope that is understood.
My favourite is Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
What is your favourite?

Hm, interesting to see how few films he actually directed, in light of how pronounced his influence is over Pretty in Pink, The Great Outdoors, Home Alone and its first sequel, and Baby’s Day Out—to the extent that I’d legitimately call those “John Hughes films,” just as much as The Thing from Another World is Hawks’s, The Nightmare Before Christmas is Burton’s, and Poltergeist is Spielberg’s.
Anyway, yes, the films he actually directed himself…
Definitely Planes, Trains, and Automobiles at the top—a hilarious movie, with superb performances from both John Candy and Steve Martin—and then… Hm, Uncle Buck, perhaps? To paraphrase Cecelia Ager, the problem is that John Candy, even at his best, was never in a movie as great as he was. I used to love Ferris Bueller, but—while still very funny—I think it has overstayed its welcome with me a bit. I’ve never liked The Breakfast Club, and I’ve never actually seen Sixteen Candles. (What!) Still, from what I have seen, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles remains (for me) Hughes’s simultaneously funniest and maturest picture. An excellent movie.

The Breakfast Club is the only film of his I truly liked.

Back when he was still alive (2001-2) his Lamborghini Diablo (it was white, afaIr...NOT red) was parked in my local Jewel (and other stores) parking lot.

The Breakfast Club is the only film of his I truly liked. I love it too. I like the message it has. That you shouldn't judge people and put them in boxes. Paul Gleason was awesome as Vernon. I love the bit where they're all running in the corridoor, trying to avoid Vernon and Wang Chun is playing.

3 way tie between 16 Candles, Ferris and Breakfast Club. But I voted for 16 Candles.

When people celebrate Hughes, it feels like they celebrate him more for his writing than his directing. Kind of the same thing for someone like Kevin Smith. I mean there's nothing wrong with his directing. He's certainly a perfectly competent filmmaker. But he's not going to go down as one of the all-time best. I mean he'll never join the ranks of Kubrick, Hitchcock, Scorsese, etc.

And I agree that Hughes' real gift was writing great comedy characters. I thought "The Breakfast Club" was okay, but after not seeing it for many years, the revisit made it seem rather shallow. I did not like "Pretty in Pink" and had always assumed that Hughes wrote the script for that one as well.

Uncle Buck, followed closely by Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
I liked both Sixteen Candles and Weird Science quite a bit, loathed The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, never saw She's Having a Baby or Curly Sue.
