even as a child the story never made much sense to me. I mean, why does a young boy like Charlie have such ancient grandparents? Whyare they allb edited den? And since the original book appeared to be set in England. I could never understand why the whole family were apparently dependent on C harlie's father - why wasn't his mother getting child benefit? why weren't the grandparents getting the old age pension? why didn't Charlie get free school dinners? even at ten (the age i read the book), I knew about these things. having the film set in America makes it more believable, becUse I suppose you don' ahve those things. your society is much more ruthless,

Well said! Grandpa Joe was a useless companion and complete liability to Charlie. Also, I always believed that those kids were dead too, as well as that girl's father. To me it made the film better, and it also explained that Boat Ride scene; some really dark shit is going on behind the scenes, and if you break the rules or do something stupid, you'll find out the hard way. in the book they are shown leaving the factory at the end. I don't think even Roald dahl would bump someone off just for drinking some chocolAte or something. The girl Violet is still purple, one of the boys has become very tall (mr W onka remarks that he can become a basketball player) Veruca is covered in rubbish etc.
