Thought it was worthwhile having a Box Office thread for what will be one of the biggest movies of all time.
It made $45 million from Thursday previews the second highest ever after The Force Awakens which did $57 million.
It's also made $61 million in 2 days overseas.
"Looking at the same suite of offshore play and at today’s exchange rates, Jedi‘s first two days are 63% above Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 25% behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Also had the 3rd highest opening day ever in the UK.

Deadline is saying a $97-100 million opening day (second best of all time) and a $202-208 million weekend which would be the fourth best of all time but a little nudge would make it the second best as well.

Trust me. After the shit that Rian Johnson just pulled, we won't be talking positively about box office sales for Ep. IX.

I think the fact that the audience reception is so divisive might help its box office numbers (at least in the opening weekend). I talked to a few people who didn't want to see it in cinema's a few weeks ago, but will probably see it this weekend because they're interested to find out what kind of movie that can cause so many strong and different reactions from people.

People didn't like Attack of the Clones and that wasn't a sudden knee jerk reaction either and Revenge of the Sith was considerably more successful.

It wasn't what I'd call a great film, but it moved the story forward in a positive way. Besides that, the PT had Vader power. Do not underestimate the power of Vader. Abrams smartly tried to keep Vader part of the story in TFA. Johnson shirked it, stupidly. VIII and IX won't get the same re-watches that VII did. And that new trilogy will flop by SW standards.

Also, and I know this puts me in the critical minority, but I thought Revenge of the Sith was a great movie and even though my original viewings of TPM and AOTC turned me off from SW in general, I still wanted to see ROTS because it featured an adult Anakin and more of Palpatine, who had been tremendous in the trilogy thus far. And even though Anakin wasn't played or written well, it's still my favorite PT movie and I'd say I enjoy re-watching it as much or more than any of the "best" films in the saga.

Deadline have upped the estimates again.
Now they're saying $100 million for the Opening Day and $208-214 million opening weekend, so that will likely be the second highest grossing opening now.
It also notes it has an "A" Cinemascore which goes against the bad scores on other sites.

After all the negative reviews on the internet I'm kinda surprised it still got an "A" cinemascore, the same as TFA.

Maybe the negative reviews are more present online then they are with the general public. After Cinemascore's "A", ComScore Engine (another big player in the polling buisness) reports a five-out-of-five stars for the movie given by the audience and a 90% overall positive with an 82% definite recommend. Forty five percent said that the Rian Johnson-directed movie came in above their expectations while close to 40% said they’ll the movie again in the theater.

Oh but wait there's more.
New updates have just come in and now they're saying it made $104 million on Friday and it's going to do $216-220 million opening weekend. That would only be an 11-13% drop off from The Force Awakens and I expected it to drop a lot more than that.

The estimates are going further up each hour. Maybe the very negative & very positive reviews have lured in more people than was expected beforehand. I've seen this kind of thing happen before, it did happen with The Force Awakens because early on they said it was looking at $215-220 million and then it went up, though it went up a bit higher than the reality but this does seem to keep going up. The best one was Jurassic World. After that actually released and the preview figures came in, they said it was on track for $115-135 million, then they said $155 million which would be one of the best opening weekends for the month of June, then $155-162 million, then $177-181 million, then $190-200 million, then it was $200 million which was going to be the highest after The Avengers, then it was $204-207 million, then it was officially estimated at $204.6 million, then it was $208-210 million before finally being $208.8 million. I don't think anything like that had ever happened before, probably won't ever happen again to that extent.

They're saying $63.6 million on Saturday.
When I checked before they were saying $218+ million for the weekend and now it says $219+ million.
