It's a bit of what writers are calling the Marvelization of Star Wars by Disney - injecting levity with verbal & non verbal cues to keep it from suffocating.
I thought it both helped paint who senior Luke has become, what his life's been like in self exile, & least just how on earth he sustains himself on that rock.
