Lucille Ball was 40?! Ye gadz! I always thought she was just in her 30s when they did the show. Yep 40. Her birthdate: 8/6/11 and the show began in 1951. It's so weird to think about a person being born in 1911. When I first read that, I thought "What do they mean 2011?" then it hit me... 1911... Wow. Really puts life into perspective on how short it really is.

While I agree that this show is widely funny, I'm bothered by the way Ricky treated Lucy--more like a child or a servant than an equal partner. Sure, this was the 1950's, but there were other shows of that era in which husband and wife shared decisions: FATHER KNOWS BEST and LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, for example.
Lucy was dissatisfied at being a housewife and mother; she craved a career in show business, but Ricky always forbade her from pursuing her goals. He claimed that she had no talent--sure, she couldn't sing (except, maybe, jazz), but she could dance and was hilarious as a comic. IMO, Ricky was afraid she would upstage him, and she probably would! As Sophia (from THE GOLDEN GIRLS) noted, Ricky's club acts were lousy.
On another thread, a couple of posters commented that Danny Thomas' character on his TV show was too controlling. Well, I think that same goes for Ricky Ricardo.
On the old IMDb format, many posters said that Lucy Ricardo was a high-maintenance schemer. Well, I don't disagree, but I think that she was forced to go behind her husband's back, or else face his enormous Cuban temper. She was clearly afraid of him, and cringed when he would flap his gums at her in Spanish.
I rarely watch this show any more.

I own the entire series on DVD and my Wife and I watch it on the weekend sometimes just to escape into a simpler time.

Fun fact: Vivian Vance was dining in a restaurant when she heard the news of William Frawley's sudden death. Her response: "Champagne for everyone!"
Yet another reason why I can't really enjoy this show. I always liked Desi, though, especially the episode in which he told the story of Red Riding Hood to little Ricky in Spanish.

Fred looked a lot older than Ethel. William Frawley was 22 years older than Vivian Vance. I am not sure what the age different was between the characters. Ethel is suppose to be older than Lucy even though Vivian Vance was only two years older than Lucille Ball. I think Ethel was still quite a bit younger than Fred. Fred was probably at least 10 or 15 years older than Ethel. I thought that they made a funny couple. Like someone said on this post, William Frawley and Vivian Vance not getting along in real life helped make the tension between the characters more believable and funny. They made a good couple.

"Why sure, honey, you're very talented." What would happen next? I struggle to imagine what the writers would make of it.

The concept of humor is beyond the understanding of those who refuse to see what was, and is, funny because of their jaded modern glasses and can turn anything into evil intent and viciouness no matter now how innocently the situations were presented.
People who see Ricky Ricardo and Ralph Kramden as Wife Abusers ? Come on !
She was clearly afraid of him, and cringed when he would flap his gums at her in Spanish. I seem to have seen an entirely different series than this particular poster. My Lucy was always on the lookout for ways to get her way no matter what .. and the funnier it turned out the better.
I feel sorry for those who cannot enjoy the humor because they have no sense of same.

These people just want to put a negative spin on everything to make themselves sound smart. You can put a negative spin on literally everything that was ever made. These shows were made with the intention of bringing joy to the audience.

louisewell. If an episode went like this: "Can I be in the show, Ricky?" "Why sure, honey, you're very talented." What would happen next? what the writers would make of it.
Might have been the introduction to a weekly variety show a la Carol Burnette and considered ahead of its time … not as funny as I Love Lucy and no grape stomping or noses alight or wrapping chocolates but … what the hey, also no abused Lucy and hostile domineering Ricky !
