There you go Erjen, you got your wish, your post is generating responses and you did not even have to dodge a discussion to get it to happen. My wish? Dude, I didn't see it coming at all, and I certainly didn't wish for it. But now that it has begun, I confess that am enjoying it as PrimeGuffer easily demolishes the little pipsqueak troll who defends Communism (whilst not having to live in some Communist hellhole himself). My bad, you pined for intelligent dialogue. I tried to give it to you, but you seem to be allergic.

Are you claiming you mined that quote from a thread I started entitled Exposing Sodomite Rituals in Hollywood?

Are you claiming you mined that quote from a thread I started entitled Exposing Sodomite Rituals in Hollywood? No, I don't see me claiming that anywhere, you mentioned it in another post. My apologies I am labouring under the impression that you intend to present a coherent and cohesive set of desires and thoughts, is that not the case?

What you mentioned about wanting intelligent dialogue in the temple thread also applies to other threads you start or are engaged in?

What you mentioned about wanting intelligent dialogue in the temple thread also applies to other threads you start or are engaged in? It's not an exact parallel as I see it, as this thread is about sodomy.....a topic which is very near and dear to many in the Internet's I-hate-God crowd. I've also been entertaining the notion that a lot of the contention between you and me may be caused by differences in national mindset. I've always understood that you probably do things very differently on those two islands of yours, so "coherent" and "cohesive" may not have the same meaning for you as for me. Do you think this is possible? Take the Japanese for instance. They think a sword accident like this is funny. I don't think it's very funny. Stupid, yes, but not funny.

My thinking is that if you want intelligent dialogue in one place, you may want it everywhere (aside from obvious parody threads), I see no reason why that would differ from this thread to the temple thread. Yes humour differs dramatically and in fact so does cultural experience. I kind of think that this clip is a bit funny, but I have very little sympathy for people who seem determined to remove themselves from the gene pool through stupidity.

In that case, it's not coincidental, it's a meme. That hand gesture is ubiquitous in the hard rock/heavy metal music communities, though it started even before them (George Clinton and Bootsy Collins used it as the password for the Mothership in Parliament-Funkadelic). Its popularity really took off with Ronnie James Dio, who said he got it from his Italian grandmother and that the symbol was meant either as a curse from or protection against the evil eye. Dio used it at every concert constantly and all the time in photo/promo-shoots. Somewhere along the way it got interpreted as devil horns (probably because of its association with heavy metal) and is now ubiquitous at metal/hard rock concerts. Anyone who's ever been to such a concert would've seen it, and it's not surprising it caught on outside that. In those photoshoots/red carpet things it's probably just meant as a cool "rock on" gesture. See here for a snippet of a cool metal documentary where Dio discussed it:

I didn't know that Ronnie James Dio was the one credited for it. I also didn't know that Heavy Metal had so many fans in high places.

The Pope, being Italian and all, probably got it from the same place Dio's grandparents did (it's part of Italian culture) where it's used as an apotropaic gesture. The sign is also very close to the sign language for "I love you," which is almost certainly the sign Clinton is making. Bush is a Texas Longhorns fan and the Hook 'em Horns sign is identical. Also, you don't have to be a heavy metal fan to have seen others using it and appropriate it as a greeting. How many know that handshakes were a way for warriors to show they were unarmed?

I hate to be a stickler for detail, but the current Pope is Argentinian. There hasn't been an Italian Pope since I was a kid.

Ah, well, he's no doubt familiar with Italian culture given that he lives there now.
