If I went through the miraculous success of redeeming my father and stopping an evil Empire, only for my nephew and a new Empire to take its place in my same lifetime, I'd give up as well. Pretty much everything accomplished in Return of the Jedi has been made pointless. And after they stop Kylo Ren and the First Order, something else will probably replace them. Over and over again. C'est la vie. Luke went from an idealistic whiner to a jaded whiner.

^ That's so. But the main culprit is Force Awakens' rehash writing which had:
- Luke fail terribly by letting the same destruction-of-the-Jedi-Order-by-an-Emo-Skywalker-who-was-seduced-by-a dark-sider happen AGAIN.
- Luke then deciding not to clean up his mess or redeeming Kylo Ben, but hiding away on a remote island to pout.
- And by doing so "in the meantime" letting the dark side/First Order rise again and destroy the Republic he fought so hard to restore (and thereby killing billions) - because Luke just does care and is so jaded.
TLJ just added insult to injury by working with the material that was given, more Porg poodo for sure but what's the difference anymore?
