Two things as to why I think it works!
1.They learned from their past mistakes from the Godzilla 2014 film and made adjustments accordingly with Kong:Skull Island moving forward.
Also this is not the first time there has been a shared universe with giant monsters, the original Toho Showa Universe took place between 1954 to 1977.
2.How can you go wrong with giant monsters destroying cities and beating the hell out of each other WWE style.

The characters are giant monsters/animals without very defined personalities, thus harder to f**k up like Batman and Superman.
