lol I want one of those (shirts I mean). Must be fun at parties. I wonder how long it will take them to fully implement the female Force thing? Right now we got topless YA emo-Rens and Marey Sues and their cheerleaders so to pander to the young female market. Maybe in the future we get full scale romcom triangles, Justin Bieber songs, soap elements and female characters discussing pink light sabers and Jedi nail polish. Look at Rey's position at the end of the movie. It's every bit the female fantasy Hunger Games was and more. Finn, Poe and Kylo all want her bod now. She gets to choose between the bad boy who needs saving, the older guy and the exotic, sensitive guy. I believe every base is covered. Will they have a three-way death match to compete for her love in this final movie? ABRAMS: Umm, Kathleen? KENNEDY: Yeah, J.J.? What is it? ABRAMS: I'm starting to run out of Star Wars films to rehash. What should I use to finish off IX? KENNEDY: Hmm... Oh, I got it. ABRAMS: It's gonna be great! KENNEDY: It's gonna be great! ABRAMS: It's gonna be great! KENNEDY: It's gonna be great!

Most of the people on this thread are insecure and threatened or they wouldn't care. They should go suck some more teet so they can finally ween off. I don't know. I feel like most of us here would love to have a daughter who is into Star Wars, I know I would. Hell, if I had a daughter that was as nerdy as me I wouldn't be upset about it! I'd love it.

So you're saying your "hot ass" wife goes against her own self interests. How does she not know that more women in anything, Star Wars etc, is something that benefits her in the long run? She's a woman! Talk about living in a bubble. I also love how the greatest attribute you have to expound her to us is that she's "hot ass", not to mention the fact that her hotness is in the eye of the beholder. And yes, my political leanings are liberal. Proud of it. I love in a world where people other than me and my kind COUNT.
Well, I refer to her as my hot-ass wife because I also have sex on the brain constantly. But, okay, if you must know, my wife is also a hell of a cook, a nurturing, attentive mother, fixes stuff around the house (because we don't ascribe to gender roles simply "because" in our relationship; roles are based on individual merit, so since I really suck at three-dimensional problem-solving, she builds our furniture and I do mindless things like grocery shopping and laundry), she has twice as many degrees as I do, she's a terrific employee in an important field, she turns over a half dozen new hobbies every year (which I find amazing and which makes her very interesting), and, exponentially most importantly, she has fantastic moral character. I just thought people would roll their eyes at me on this thread if I bragged so much about her, so I stuck with "hot-ass wife." As far as wanting to see more female participation in (this particular case) entertainment, of course she's all for that. So was I, remember? Did I originally scoff at the idea that the future of the Jedi was a girl? Hell no. But like me, she doesn't want anything just handed to her in life so that things appear "equal." Like me, and just like the way we run our house, roles must be filled by the most qualified candidate, regardless of race, sex or creed. Like me, she thinks that you should have to work for it. Like me, she wholeheartedly disagrees with the notion that modern feminism has made anything better for women. In fact, as I alluded to earlier, she would vehemently argue that modern feminism has made life much more difficult on women. It is clear that the creative team at Disney is unnaturally foisting feminism into the plots of these new movies. While I admit I missed the boat on this in TFA, I've seen the light in TLJ because Disney shone it so brightly. The way the bridge team was written for the Resistance proved to me that there was specific intent. And that's my beef. When you have to force something, it's never as good as it could have been, and, as is the case with TLJ, it frequently ends up poor. I'm not liberal. At all. And in my world, people other than me and my kind ALSO COUNT. Happy New Year Brother!

Would have made my dating life in highschool much easier. lol. Just that I think girls outgrow these things far more than boys do.

I have two daughters and I love that many movies I enjoy are pandering more to girls. I want my girls to like Star Wars. They still prefer Princess Leia to Rey though.

The force doesn't have a gender. Truth. The Force is everything. There's no focus on any one thing. After all these years, I still get chills reading that.

But seriously don't you see that her ability to do all that is dependent on the fact that other women in the past fought certain battles to get her those rights? Because the 16 year old girls were probably first exposed to Star Wars with the prequels, and they stunk... Ultimately, the answer is that the Sci-Fi/Fantasy stigma still rears it's ugly head. Now this is definitely on the decline...Dungeons and Dragons has been on a steady uptick in both acceptance and actual play for a few years now. Same with things like Magic the Gathering. The DC Super Hero Girls toy line is very successful. The Marvel movies would not make the money they do if there weren't women seeing them too, and multiple times. Wonder Woman had all female audiences! And with these new movies, little girls are seeing characters they can identify with...so there is less stigma. The "Forces of Destiny" toy line actually has some of the best Star Wars merchandise available right now and that is most definitely aimed at girls since it focuses on Rey, Leia, Jyn and the other female protagonists. So at some point these girls will become teenagers and won't have the same pressures to give up on these interests because more and more will share them.

She does not have a sister, unfortunately for any potentially lucky bachelors out there. Even if she did, I would warn you, my wife was not easy and I assume her sister would not be either. That mare threw me off a hundred times at least before I broke her. And then, even though I've broken her, like all women, she still changes course on me from time to time (but I have an iron-like grip on the reins and that has made all the difference). This is an exact quote of what she told her mom back I first started courting her: "Married? I'm not interested in being married. I don't need a man to define my happiness. I want to focus on getting my p.h.d. and being the best <insert name here> that I can be. I'm not interested in marriage or kids." Then she preceded to tell me this to my face when she knew I had honest designs on her. She also challenged me constantly, in every way you can imagine. She'd beat me in some skill game and rub it in, she challenged my thinking, challenged my hubris, everything. Or how about this? We didn't have sex before we got married. Not once. Now, I was no virgin when we met (I was 24 at the time). In fact, I had just gotten out of a long relationship in which I had sex frequently. And for two full years, I went sexless for this girl. Props to her for making me go through that, too. Not only did she prove she can set a high standard and keep it (which in turn, proved her self-worth), and not only was I able to prove something to her by respecting her boundaries, but ultimately, it allowed us to develop our friendship without any distractions. Thirteen years and two kids later, I get laid 3-4 time a week. It was all worth it. I hear horror stories all the time about couples who have been together for three years+ and go months without having sex. Geez, no wonder the divorce rate is so high! As for other women paving the way, of course I see that. It's why I amended my responses going forward to say modern feminism. Modern feminism states some things that I think are unequivocally false, like my wife's previous idea that she didn't need a man. Because she did. She needed to grow as a person and she needed the unique challenges that I presented in order to grow. Just like I need her and her strengths to shore up my weaknesses and also her weaknesses so that I learn to cope with them, thus growing as a person. Modern feminism also seems to promote female power at the expense of diminishing men. That's myopic. Women are great. Men are great. When they behave right, both are made even greater together. I can't condone any cause that resorts to lifting one group up while tearing down another. Also, the original point of feminism (back when it was a good thing) was to bring freedom in to women's lives. My wife would argue that modern feminism has done the exact opposite. Women don't get to abandon their traditional roles as housekeeper/mother. Nope, they're still stuck doing those chores more or less. Except now they have to work full-time as well. The proper dose of feminism was getting them the freedom to vote and getting them equal play space when it comes to work, education, marriage/divorce and creativity. But it went beyond that. Now every cereal commercial features an intelligent woman who is smartly-dressed (fresh off a big VP meeting at work to be sure), minding the children and making every decision while some mopey, beer-gut clueless dad acts like a toddler who can't wipe his own ass and would melt into a puddle of confusion if he didn't have his super hero wife around to lead him in the right direction. But just think about that scenario. Is that a good scenario for women? Is it good that one person has to work a full day of stress, make all the smart choices at home, take care of the kids and do everything that needs being done? That doesn't sound like "more freedom" to me. It sounds like no freedom at all. And that's my wife's point. And, ultimately, now that we have kids, she pushed for the idea that she would cut 1/3 of her work time and spend more time at home with our kids, even though she makes more money than I do. I like having lots of money, but I supported that idea and so we've done that. And if she had her druthers, she'd quit her job entirely. She still believes in that old myth that the husband/father should be the one to shoulder the more stressful responsibilities in life, like keeping a career going. But she also evolved when she met me. It was never really that things needed to change for women. It was always the case that things needed to change with men. We were the ones who needed to change. We were the ones who needed to learn to respect women naturally (didn't need it forced on us by some new societal norm), to grant them the freedom they have now, to work hard for them, to appreciate and praise them, to try our best to understand them (lol) and to dedicate ourselves exclusively to just one of them. If men had been acting right all along, feminism would have been completely unnecessary. Ha, nope. I'm radically conservative, actually. But courage, kindness, fairness, work ethic, respect and charity are things that all men should aspire to, regardless of their political association. Like any decent person, I want everyone to have the opportunity that this country promised long ago...that all men and women must have an equal opportunity to pursue happiness. I just don't think that everyone should be guaranteed "happiness" and I have different methods for how I think this can best be achieved.

You know that scene in Sleeping Beauty when Maleficent shows the prince that she plans to keep him locked up until he is an old man? To Disney management, Maleficent is the heroine.
Disney uses women characters for propaganda purposes as they do with black characters.
The first action female heroine was probably "Mountain Girl" from DW Griffith's Intolerance 1916.
Son of Kong had a strong female lead.
There really was little problem in the West with women issues compared to the East. The patriarchy was in the Middle East and beyond. Europe had female leaders, a woman wrote the most famous novel of the last 200 years. Friedan and Steinem were creating demons in the West when they should have focused on their own house-reforming Judaism.
The question is whether Disney can or would backtrack from its hateful anti-social agenda. I really doubt it. They would if money was their goal, but social change is.
They don't seem to be starving for cash do they? It's like the Bolsheviks in Czarist Russia getting money from Wall Street. Disney film is the equivalent of a Trotsky pamphlet at this point.

That's where we have an issue in understanding each others views. You're saying that you think liberals are trying to make it so that it is "guaranteed" that all people are equal, but that's not the case at all. What we ARE saying is that the "equal opportunity to pursue happiness" is NOT equal and has never been equal in the first place.
Instead its a hierarchy, with white male at the top over all others categories, including white women. The more different you are from white male the less equal, going further and further down the totem pole. In the latter half of the 20th century (until now) the paradigm shifted even further to include wealth. The more wealthy the more larger your slice of the pie at the expense of others.
On this hierarchy there are some people who are so low that they hardly even exist. Can you imagine being a gay native American Indian in a wheelchair who lives on a res? Sure you're an American citizen, and you're expected to pay your taxes and put in to society, but do you think that guy gets a fair and equal chance? Fuck no. That guy's fucked before he's even started. So liberals are the bad guys when they create a program that makes it so that guy doesn't end up starving and homeless?
No, in a country this prosperous its our responsibility to take care of that guy. A version of that guy might be your own father or brother or son and you'd want him looked out for. Should he be on public assistance forever? Of course not. But at least until he can get on his own feet, so to speak (no pun intended).
This "liberal agenda" is not evil as many on the right have been brainwashed into believing. We're trying to get to that place of "equal opportunity to pursue happiness" in the first place. Once we're there then we can talk about right and wrong.

Agree. I wasn't on the anti-feminist bandwagon after TFA, but I am now. I was all for a little girl power injection into the saga, but not at the expense of the saga itself. Cramming this facet into the plot is what led to the maze that RJ couldn't write himself out of. He killed Snoke unceremoniously because he thought it was the only way to get the audience to believe Kylo was a real badass. Well, the audience believed that from moment one of his appearance in TFA when he stopped the blaster bolt. Then they lost that belief when he got his ass whupped by a novice nobody. What a tangled web was weaved in order to prove a girl can do a man's job (except better). These movies have never been about making people believe Ren is a badass. Exactly the opposite. Ren, since the moment he took his mask off, has been a self-aware joke. A Darth Vader wannabe poser without the cool, calm, collectedness. That continued in this one even after killing Snoke (himself I assume a self-aware joke as well, considering the Wizard of Oz set up and early death) when Luke made him look like an ass. He's like Joffrey in space to me.

Completely disagree. It is, as of today, totally equal in terms of social standards. In individual cases where it is not, the sins of the father are inherited by the son. This is the natural way of things and to try to change it is dangerous. On that I agree and it was not until about a generation ago. This is outdated thinking. It was once true, but no longer is. Wealth and influence are no longer necessarily hereditary. Whereas one's upbringing can greatly increase one's starting point, everyone has an equal opportunity to gain wealth and influence in this country if one is willing to make the right choices. Consider the father who grew up without a good education and who puffs his way through an unskilled blue collar job all day in order for his son to have the means to acquire a better education. That son doesn't dick around and gets his degree, stays out of trouble, etc. Said son moves from poverty into the middle class. The son retires a millionaire and suddenly, within two generations, his sons are inheriting millions. Hopefully his sons will be equally wise and pass on tens of millions to their sons in turn, vastly improving their benevolent influence in this world beyond what their middle class parents could do. I say "hopefully," because those sons are my sons. My parents don't have degrees. When I came into this world we were considered to be toward the upper end of the lower class. And now I will retire a millionaire. It has nothing to do whatsoever with privilege and everything to do with opportunity. But opportunity doesn't move on its own. It only exists. Wise choices are what activate opportunity. And as it pertains to the rare exceptions where there really is no safe, decent educational facility available to the poor, I will be the first one to vote yes on the tax proposal that endorses better education and the required safety that goes along with it. The only expense of others that I've identified in my course to obtaining wealth was me taking opportunities that others left on the table. Don't be ridiculous. Nobody wants to see anybody starving or homeless. And I don't a single conservative would say fuck the guy in a wheelchair. In addition the taxes that I already pay, I donate to charities - and, more importantly - I help fund the lives of people in my own family. That's how it's supposed to work. Nobody in government needs to take care of Mamaw because winterssuicide learned long ago the call to help widows and orphans and knows that working directly with the people you know is more efficient than a bureaucracy, so Mamaw needn't worry. Let me ask you: are your writing checks for people in your family? Because that's where it needs to start. See above. Okay, so see, we kind of agree. I'm all for helping people who are down on their luck. But helping them means teaching them to fish. And they have to be willing to gut those fish and get their hands dirty. I feel like we're there with the exception of some inner city education systems and I believe that money needs to be dedicated to that and that (per usual), the wealthy should/will shoulder a majority of the burden.

Man-made forces are at work that make things the way they are; creating the inequality in the first place and hoarding wealth. There's nothing natural about it. We are not animals in the wild. Talk to me about nature when we're talking about lions and wolves.
The truth of the matter is that there's still inequality left and right and all over the place. If you don't see it its because you CHOOSE not to. "As of today" its totally still here, and its because people like you say it isn't there that it still IS there. We cant work on a problem if you don't even acknowledge it. Is it that you think we're all crazy and are just making stuff up and crying inequality when there is none?
