A week ago, Paramount started pre-production for "Friday the 13th" remake. They had the script, the director, they were casting. They even had a filming location in Georgia prepared.
Then "Rings" flopped at the Box Office and they pulled the plug on production.
I HATE Hollywood and their knee jerk reactions to what's 'trending'.
They were going to make this when they first got the rights back from New Line as a 'found footage' type horror film, but Paranormal Activity 5 didn't do good and Blair Witch didn't do well, so they scrapped that idea. Then they were going to do something else (I cannot remember at this time) but whatever format they were copying wasn't doing well so they scrapped it.
Now, they finally had everything lined up. They were going to film this and have it ready for October, Friday the 13th. What a PERFECT release date. SCREW YOU Paramount. You've had the rights back for YEARS! Just give the damn thing back to New Line and let them make one.
I don't want another REBOOT. I just want to simply get a film about campers getting slashed in the woods by Jason. It doesn't need a backstory, it doesn't need another 'retelling' it doesn't even need to be modern. I don't care if its one of those ambiguous films where you don't know what time it was. Just do one off movies, they don't need to connect, we don't need a SHARED UNIVERSE with Freddy, or whatever ideas they are contemplating.
The only cohesive idea I thought of was doing a trilogy about Tommy Jarvis and Jason. That's the only 'remake" I want. Do the first one where Tommy is a kid, the second one he is in a psych ward as a teen, and the third one he's an adult and goes back to find Jason has resurrected. Just a better retelling of that Part IV, V, VI but as a stand alone trilogy.
I always felt Jason needed a protagonist.

Rings flopped? The latest one? I guess the proper thing to say was it underperformed. It opened at 13M. with 7% on RT and a fan rating of 30% ... It's safe to say it mint make 30M...

i'm opposed to remakes in general but this was a really boneheaded move.

I'm just waiting for someone to get ambitious and make one themselves with a little bit of money and decent equipment and not just a 10 dollar fan film in someone's neighborhood nature trail walk. Let's be honest, you could make an f13 movie on par with those old early to mid 80s installments for a couple thousand dollars now. There is zero reason for the studio to be pumping 20 million dollars into the production of a Friday the 13th movie.

But I think the production on the movie has been phell from what I've heard. Maybe they just weren't confident in the idea at all and the Ring movie solidified the decision. Im disappointed but either way we will get a new one eventually.

Considering it already had a reboot/remake that came out in 2009, the one they were planning might have been a bomb.

The 2009 remake/reboot was overproduced to hell and back. That whole "supernatural spin" part is really retarded. New Line already did that with Jason Goes to Hell which the universe and his dog hates. I'm not really excited by the "a villain is born" part of the story either. Origin stories in horror films usually suck and Jason really doesn't need more background anyway.

I can't say I'm all that surprised, unfortunately. I knew not to get too excited about it.

It flopped, no matter how nicely you put it. I loved the first film, was suckered in to seeing the second (I hated it), and when I saw trailer for this third one, I decided to wait for "On Demand."

This is probably good news. That sequel is still coming out later this year though, right? Or was that the remake?
