Only a few efforts by Partho Ghosh come to my mind: 100 Days & Teesra Kaun (not sure)?
I feel that Giallo films translate beautifully to Indian sensibilities. In fact, all the crime shows that popped up on TV in the last decade: Crime Patrol, Saavdhaan India, etc - they all seem like an offshoot of this genre. Their stories focus less on the mechanics of crime and more on its titillating aspects.
The stories are already there. The budget requirement is low. The films work without stars. Plenty of eroticism and gore ensure mass market. So how come Bollywood producers, except Vishesh films, never attempted to capitalize on this genre?

Pimp, I guess you're not a big fan of Giallos  Not me either. But I always wonder why the genre wields such a cult-following amongst film nerds. And I guess it is more or less the reason that you mentioned. The genre represents the left-hand path of cinema in contrast to the right-hand path that has always dominated the western culture, including its cinema. The right-hand path focuses on conscious, logic, structure and restraint whereas the left-hand path focuses on subconscious, emotion, aesthetics and indulgence. So, I guess a western film nerd kind of laps it up because of yin-yang principle. And that's why I think Bollywood is the perfect institution that can deconstruct the genre, mix our indigenous left-hand 'rasa' (dance, music, macabre, etc.) and reconstruct it into a more "sensuously bizarre" (an apt description for Indian women) artifact. It would sell like hot cakes. All these young budding directors, who don't have an ounce of real-life experience or patience to create interesting art, can at least hone their cinematic skills by splashing gleefully in this backyard pool of sorts rather than trying to fake it up in the alien sea waters and drowning miserably. |
