This film written by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson starred the TV rock group The Monkees. It played in a theater where I worked and I thought it was trippy in parts. It is on my mind because it was part of a blu-ray box set that I bought that was packaged many in cardboard. This turned out to be critical in that I now have a bunch of loose discs since termites ate all the covers and the box.
But maybe it isn't trippy, and only silly or pretentious? At any rate, Terri Garr shows up in an early appearance for her, and has her first line in a film, but blink and you will miss her.

In an interview Mickey Dolenz said he liked the way the film turned out, but he wasn't sure if it was the right film for the Monkees to do at that time. Maybe their first film should have been more of a lighthearted romp and save the trippy stuff for later. We'll never know.

I saw an interview with Michael Nesmith where he indicated that he thought the film had been designed to finish The Monkees as a group. It was released after the TV show had been cancelled.

I watched this yesterday for the first time in decades. One scene that stood out was Davy Jones singing Daddy's Song (written by Harry Nilsson) with choreography by Toni Basil. She dances with him for part of it, uncredited.

I love The Monkees. I watched the TV show constantly. But I don't think I've ever seen this movie. I wish I could find it somewhere.

Another version without the squeeze, but cropped on the sides. I found yet another with VHS low res....

It felt strange to see it again after almost 50 years. I remembered some parts but had completely forgotten others.

I love this movie. Lots of dark humor. Totally wrong for the kiddie fans of the group at the time, and the hippies who sneered at the Monkees would never give it a chance.
