Well that article seemed to be an ad for Israeli tourism and very dumb but I think the issue of trophy hunting was decided in the Most Dangerous Game 1932 or even your average Tarzan film. John Huston made the Roots of Heaven in the 1950s. Estimates I have seen suggest there were 10 million elephants in 1800 and 100 000 lions in 1900. The numbers are way down to a fraction of that.
Lion and elephant populations were healthy until people started shooting them. And they couldnt shoot them before the gun was invented.
As the numbers shrink those that really like to do it (psychopaths) will come up with any excuse to justify it.

There was another documentary last year or so on a similar subject called Blood Lions.
