I’d be interested in reading your thoughts on this program—a list of top-five episodes to start, or just some general comments on the show. I never really watched this one, and, all these years later, I’ve been discovering it—and it’s grand, just grand. It’s more faithful to the Batman spirit and ethos than any of the live-action movies; animation helps, of course, and the animation in question is just grand, with Kevin Conroy as, perhaps, the best of the Batmen (tied with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, in my estimation, and just overtaking the great Adam West). A trifle superior to Superman: The Animated Series and equal to the animated Justice League series; the film-noir qualities are superb, as are all of the performances. The best episodes I’ve seen thus far: 1. “Perchance to Dream” (S1:E30) 2. “Almost Got ‘Im” (S1:E46) 3. “Heart of Ice” (S1:E14) 4. “Beware the Gray Ghost” (S1:E18) 5. “Trial” (S2:E3) Several honorable mentions, and many episodes I have yet to see. One more point, and then I’ll hand the reins over to all of you: has anyone else noticed how Mark Hamill’s vocal portrayal of the Joker seems inspired by Frank Gorshin’s Riddler in the Adam West series?

I own the entirety of "Batman: The Animated Series" (BTAS) on DVD. That includes "The New Batman Adventures", which were packaged as BTAS Vol. 4. Several years ago I did a complete rewatch of the entire DC Animated Universe (DCAU), with the exception of "Static Shock" and the "The Zeta Project", which I never got into. But yeah, I own BTAS, STAS, Batman Beyond, JL and JLU. Here are some resources that you might find interesting as you discover the DCAU: dcau.wikia.com/wiki/Batman:_The_Animated_Seriesdcau.wikia.com/wiki/Superman:_The_Animated_Seriesdcau.wikia.com/wiki/The_New_Batman_Adventuresdcau.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_Beyonddcau.wikia.com/wiki/Justice_League_%28animated_series%29dcau.wikia.com/wiki/Justice_League_Unlimited_%28animated_series%29

Thanks, alpha128. I did know a few episodes of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited; I particularly enjoyed “Legends,” “Injustice for All,” and “A Better World” from the former series and “Initiation,” “This Little Piggy,” and especially “For the Man who Has Everything” (a marvellous half-hour). But for whatever reason I never got around to watching many episodes of Batman, and I’m happy that I’ve now started looking into it.

One of the things I love about the DCAU is their attention to continuity and they way they build on earlier plot developments. For example the JLU episode "Divided We Fall" (2005) builds on the STAS episode "Ghost in the Machine" (1997)! And that's just one example. I recommend you watch all these series in order.

A phenomenal series. One of the greatest animated shows of all time. I can't say enough positive things about BTAS, in fact, the entire DCAU gets so much right.

My favorite episodes as a kid were Christmas with the Joker, Joker's Favor, The Underdwellers, The Last Laugh, Fear of Victory, and What is Reality?

I'd only previously watched the Adam West TV series and the Tim Burton movie, so Batman: The Animated Series was the third iteration of Batman I watched and it still remains the only animated version of Batman I have ever seen (I also really enjoyed the 'movie' Batman: Mask of the Phantasm). Whenever anyone talks about animated Batman, I automatically always think of this show. For a brief period of time when I was younger, I collected the comics which matched the animated series show in the style that they drew the characters. Consequently, whenever they cast the roles for the characters in the live action movies nowadays, I always try to picture what actors would look most like the version of the characters from this show - as they're the versions I'm most familiar with. I also really loved the show's theme/opening credits. I don't think I've enjoyed an animated series as much since. My memory’s not great, so I don’t really remember much of the show, just bits and pieces. However, one episode that stands out in my mind was the one which was like the show’s version of The Island of Dr. Moreau, in which Selina Kyle/Catwoman was turned into an actual cat-woman. What makes the episode stand out in my mind the most, though, is the character of Tygrus. The reason he stood out to me was because he kind of resembled my cat at the time (except my cat wasn’t a giant hulking cat-man, he was just a moggy mixed with a Russian Blue – which led to him looking like an abnormally large Russian Blue). Anyway, I remember feeling sorry for Tygrus in the episode – and part of that may have had to do with him vaguely resembling my cat. I remember really liking the show and many of its interpretations of the classic Batman characters – a lot of which I always compare any live action versions to. I do feel that the show reached a ‘happy medium’ between being ‘too fanciful’ and being ‘too serious’ – something the movies have yet to really master, I think (though I have liked several of them quite a lot).

My favorite exchange of dialogue from the “Tyger, Tyger” episode:
Tyger (after attacking Batman): “My father told me to kill you!” Batman: “Your father was a test tube.”

OK, I still love this show, but I just saw the very worst B:TAS episode I've ever seen—“The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne” (great title, though). The plot is just dreadful, and the animation is, somehow, even worse. Avoid this one.

There is no reason it shouldn't be translated to live action cinema. Yet we get George Clooney's nipples & Ben Affleck's angry old man.

I think the Keaton movies come close: same mood, same half-’40s, half-modern setting, same music. The TV show was based on the Keaton movies, if I’m remembering correctly. But you’re right, even the Nolan flicks don’t share the same tone as the show.

The last episode I saw was “Be a Clown,” which starts out somewhat routinely but builds to a fantastic climax that recalls, of all things, Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes (the film adaptation of which which is perfect Hallowe’en viewing—it should have made it to my Hallowe’en Movies list).
I guess I’m trying to absorb a lot of Batman stuff to write my own Batman vs. Cthulhu story, which I still intend to post around here some time before Oct. 31.

Agreed, it’s wonderful.
If you haven’t seen Batman Beyond, give it a try. I think you’ll be surprised. I consider it to be just as good myself.
