#15 - Dudley - The Royal Tenenbaums Sure it's a borderline cameo sized role, I still dig it. Wes found Stephen Lea Sheppard after he appeared in Freaks & Geeks, which I think was itself a happy accident - supporting bg character, kept being written in? From Vancouver BC. Dudley is great comic fodder here, a throwaway character the film just wouldn't be quite the same without. 'That cab has a dent in it.'

#14 - Spots - Isle of Dogs#13 - Henry - The Royal TenenbaumsExcellent character, balancing out from the chaotic Tenenbaum family proper. His 1-1 scene with Royal in the kitchen is so f'n electric... both must've had a blast filming it. Quiet, stoic, solid moral compass... Henry's a champ. 'I don't think you're an asshole, Royal. I just think you're kind of a son of a bitch.'

#12 - Chief - Isle of DogsThe lead dog, not always in favour of their mission, he's their most interesting character. I really like Cranston's dry wit & droll response, he's seen & heard enough for 2 lifetimes & won't be suckered into a quick fix. His arc is the film's finest. 'Don't ask me to fetch that stick.'#11 - Anthony - Bottle Rocket Perhaps higher than I'd expected myself, he really shines every re-watch. He's all in with Dignan even while kinda questioning the meaning of it all. A fun character to hang with. There's not much more to add, Anthony helps keep the film both light on air & a bit grounded when it needs. 'I can't come home, Grace, I'm an adult.'

#10 - Ned - The Life Aquatic with Steve ZissouNed's awesome. Gets along with pretty much everyone, loves the tag along with Team Zissou, & has several brilliant scenes with most of the lead crew. Sublime character arc. Owen's flawless role. 'I've never seen so many electric jellyfish in all my life!'

This is a fun list I played with a few years ago, updated because sure why not... 8 Wes Anderson films, my fav 4 characters from each (some films had more favs, I simply wanted to keep it clean cut)... From #32 to #1... this may be a few days, I'd prefer to find the right photos & words to accompany... This list isn't exactly in stone, some ballpark'ing it... i love this list here

#8 - Eleanor - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Angelica Huston is somewhat of a Wes mainstay, & Eleanor is easily my fav turn of hers. The 'brains of Team Zissou', she's got smarts, screen presence, along with her ability to keep up with their sense of humour, almost always 1 step ahead of anyone. 'Your cat's dead.'
'What? Which one?' 'Marmalade. I'm sorry.' [lighting cigarette] 'What happened?' 'A rattlesnake bit it in the throat.'

#7 - Margaret - RushmoreMargaret is like the co-soul of the film. While Max is the lead protagonist, it's not until Margaret appears that the film's depression dip takes a turn for the brighter. 'Thank you. I loved it when you grabbed onto the bottom of the chopper as it was taking off.'

#6 - Herman - RushmoreIt was Bill Murray who brought me into the Wes'verse, & here he plays Herman for scale pay. Pretty much all over the map, Blume is the film's firecracker who keeps it lively, & also the mature side of Max's life opus. 'It's good. But, let's hope its got a happy ending.'

#5 - Klaus - The Life Aquatic with Steve ZissouWillem Dafoe brings the funny so hard for me here, his range into that character is so f'n brilliant. Klaus lives & breathes the Team Zissou life more than anyone... it's my #11 film all time & he's one of its indisputable pillars. 'Esteban was eaten!' 'Is he dead?'

#4 - Max - Rushmore Max is a solo tour de force if there ever was one. Hard to put into words such a vortex of a persona. Love his plays & clubs, even while failing nearly all his classes. Toe to toe with Bill Murray is great. 'Tell that stupid Mick he just made my list of things to do today.'

#3 - Cpt. Sharp - Moonrise KingdomBruce m'f'ing Willis. Loving Wes' work is even more fun when actors you love happily sign up left, right, & centre. Captain Sharp is a wonderful character, playing it straight as small island police. Great as father figure for orphaned Sam, with a tint of fun on the side with Frances' Mrs. Bishop, Bruce in one of my fav roles of his, or anyone else's. 'That's very eloquent. I can't argue against anything you're saying. But then again, I don't have to, 'cause you're 12 years old.'

#2 - Dignan - Bottle RocketIt would only be natural for Wes' co-writer Owen Wilson to play one of his most quintessential characters, to this day. Dignan is as the title suggests - a rocket full of life, even if only a bottle rocket in scale. Pretty much his entire dialogue (& presence) makes me laugh or smile, tremendous enjoyment for me. 'Marrrco!'

#1 - Steve Zissou - The Life Aquatic with Steve ZissouThis character, performance, role, is everything to me, & of course it's Bill f'n Murray on point from a to z. LOVE this film, & love Steve Zissou who loves his gig in the film. Entire range of emotion, all genuine & memorable. Surely my fav film character ever. 'Son of a bitch, I'm sick of these dolphins.'

#9 - Gustave H. - The Grand Budapest HotelOmg, energy & zest to the nth degree... & beyond. Tour de force performance by Fiennes. I love the exchange... 'Is it simply the last connection to that vanished world, his world if you will?''To be frank, I think his world had vanished long before he ever entered it.' Gustave H. is such a great character. You can never go wrong with Fiennes.

You can never go wrong with Fiennes. They nearly went wrong with the casting, of course the word was Johnny Depp either turned it down or wasn't available. TGBH simply would've been an inferior film without Fiennes... how inferior I wish not to know.

A slew of honourable mentions for my list, including nearly the entire slate of characters from Life Aquatic. I really wanted to pare it to 4 per so as to spread the films out. Jeff Goldblum simply was in roles for instance with much more personal favs of mine.

Watching Harry Potter reminded me that it's fun how Wes has worked with both Dumbledore & Voldemort.
