That's like the grandfather paradox in time travel. Realistically, yes, Palps was dead meat, he lost and Windu was about to slay him. Yet, story-wise Palps must survive, so even if Anakin had not interfered, the SW-universe had always bent in a way so to ensure that the OT (with Palps alive) may transpire, or we had another massive plot hole in the saga.

Yet, story-wise Palps must survive, so even if Anakin had not interfered, the SW-universe had always bent in a way so to ensure that the OT (with Palps alive) may transpire, or we had another massive plot hole in the saga. The plot armor is strong in this one!
