MCU (17 films)Avg. budget: $184,064,706 Avg. worldwide box office: $794,619,368 Avg. profit: $610,554,662 DCEU (5 films)Avg. budget: $220,000,000 Avg. worldwide box office: $750,650,750 Avg. profit: $530,650,750 Disney Star Wars (3 films)Avg. budget: $235,333,333 Avg. worldwide box office: $1,459,317,597 Avg. profit: $1,223,984,264 notes: All figures were obtained from the-numbers.com (links will be at the end of the post). Some of the budgets may not be official. The average profit margins do not reflect what the studios actually keep, because movie theaters keep a portion of all ticket sales. The portion they keep is not always the same from film to film, but a general rule of thumb that I've heard is to take away a third of the total box office receipts. One film from each franchise is still in theaters ("Thor: Ragnarok" from the MCU, "Justice League" from the DCEU, and "Star Wars: the Last Jedi" from Disney Star Wars), so the final gross of these films is not accurately reflected. For the DCEU I subtracted the projected budget of a sixth film (Aquaman) since it has not been released, and therefore it would throw the average profit margin off. For Star Wars: the Last Jedi I used a rumored budget of $200 million because the site I used did not have any budget listed. For the Star Wars franchise I only used the figures for the Disney-era movies. links: MCU DCEUStar Wars

Mathematical Analysis: The average profit margin of the prequels was $711 million. Adjusted for inflation it is $1 billion, 91 million. That number is very comparable to the Disney Star Wars number, is it not?

But Star Wars profits are decreasing. Marvels are steady.
