I think payphones should still be around just in case you need to call someone and you don't have a cell phone handy. They don't need to be everywhere, but I think they could be useful in places like gas stations, airports, etc.

We have payphones at work because we're not allowed to bring in cell phones.

I've never used a payphone.
I've almost never used my mobile phone either.
I don't like talking to people on the phone.

I can remember using a payphone a few times shortly after I moved to New York City, which was 1995. I probably wouldn't have used one later than about 1997, though. I can't really remember any specific calls well enough, but most of them would have probably been work-related.

We have payphones at work because we're not allowed to bring in cell phones. That's interesting. Why won't they let you use cell phones inside the prison? What is the worry there?

Concerns that inmates could get hold of them and make contacts outside they're not allowed to make. I hadn't even realized that there were restrictions on who inmates could contact. That seems kind of bogus on the face of it.

Very good question. It's been over 10 years I'm sure, maybe even over 15. As for the circumstances, I do not know.

...I have never even owned a cell phone...and never will... They are handy to have when you lose the people you are with in the BIG BOX Stores It wasn't in a big box store but a mall about a dozen years ago: hubby and I became separated and couldn't find each other. And what were we there to buy? Our first - and last, as it turned out - mobile phone. He needed it to stay in touch with his employer while we were closing up my father's house after his death, because my penny-wise/pound-foolish sister-in-law had had his land line disconnected. And when we got there, we couldn't get a signal. It's been a paperweight for over 10 years now.

2007 - I called my house. I had one of those things where you can charge it back to the household, so I didn't need any money to make the call. I forgot the number; I used to be able to remember it as I used it often enough.
