I'll only buy digital if it's an independent artist i like that can only get digital distribution Likewise, I will only buy an album in the digital format if it is: 1.) REALLY good and 2.) ONLY available in the MP3 format. Thankfully most albums, even those on independent labels, are available on CD.

I can relate. Fortunately, I can count on one hand the number of times I purchased a full album as a digital download because it wasn't available in the CD format: - Absolute Power - "Absolute Power"
- Snakeyes - "The Ultimate Sin"
I still felt compelled to create a "proper" CD for each album. I burned each album to a CD-R, and created/printed CD labels and jewel case inserts for each.

I buy 3-5 new cds a year, for artists that I love & I'm a bit completist about. I listen to 97% of my music (& 100% podcasts) via iPod Classic 6th gen, acts as my expandable hard drive & doesn't use battery for anything else. Streaming I think one day is inevitable for me, maybe even movie watching too, yet that could be another 10-20yrs away I think for me.

I suppose it had to happen eventually, but after purchasing about 160 CDs by mail order over the last decade, I finally got a delivery that was so mangled that the disc itself took damage.
The jewel case was cracked front and back in several places. Even the tray that holds the CD in place was cracked. And one of the jewel case corners was almost crushed.
I took the damaged package to a UPS Store for the return, and the woman behind the counter said "CDs" in a way that made it sound like I was returning stone knives and bearskins.

I keep a supply of Memorex Standard Clear Jewel Cases on hand - in case I receive a CD where the "disc and papers are still ok" but the case is damaged. The annoying thing is when the outside of the jewel case is in pristine condition, but you still have to replace the case because the "teeth" that hold the disc to the tray are broken. But the worst thing is when you get a damaged digipak in the mail. That happens to me once and even though the disc itself was fine, I had no choice but to return it.

alpha128 I despise digipacks. because if the case breaks, you have to buy the entire album again to replace it. save the cardboard for the vinyl records I should really get a pack of those memorex cases. I ordered 9 Weird Al Yankovic Cds I didn't own new on amazon and even sealed, there were cracks in the cases What bugs me the most are these "Manufactured on Demand with CD-R" titles made on demand by amazon. I'm annoyed by the lack of effort on the disc artwork and liner notes

I can't imagine it would any cheaper to manufacture a digipak than to use printed inserts and a standard jewel case. Plus, digipaks are more fragile and less replaceable. So what's the point? I should really get a pack of those memorex cases. They're sold in ten packs. You can find them on Amazon or at office supply stores. I ordered 9 Weird Al Yankovic Cds I didn't own new on amazon and even sealed, there were cracks in the cases What bugs me the most are these "Manufactured on Demand with CD-R" titles made on demand by amazon. I'm annoyed by the lack of effort on the disc artwork and liner notes The CD I just returned was also an Amazon "Manufactured on Demand with CD-R" title. I don't know if the disc was damaged in transit or during the manufacturing process, but the whole package was so mangled I just sent it back. I have only bought one other "Manufactured on Demand with CD-R" title from Amazon, but that was fine. So I don't have a lot of experience with these. But yeah, they focus on the front cover artwork and definitely skimp on the rest of the CD booklet.

alpha128 thanks. I actually had to replace about 90 cd cases 2 years ago. I moved from Washington state to Pennsylvania and a good portion of my cd cases got damaged in fedex's shipping So I had purchased them before. I ordered a 50 pack of another brand but the parts that hold the discs were black and i needed some clear ones, So I have ordered the memorex ones you're referring to. I just need some new ones. Luckily only about 2 cd discs received scratches and they were in Walmart's $5 bin I own 3 MOD CD-R titles from amazon. 2 are from Sony owned Labels. One is from A Warner Owned Label. Warner actually provided Amazon with a nice booklet that includes liner notes. The sony ones are blank on the inside and just include the track listings. I can't even tell who wrote the songs without using discogs.com or wikipedia

alpha128 What I hate more than digipacks are these Cases for CD singles used on non-american singles If they break, they're just as difficult to replace

What I hate more than digipacks are these Cases for CD singles used on non-american singles If they break, they're just as difficult to replace Perhaps it's hard to tell from the picture, but that looks like a normal slim CD case to me. Are you saying these non-american singles use a third type of CD case?

alpha128 yeah they're shaped differently than a slim case to accompany the booklet, which has a different shape than your standard jewel case booklet here's a close up of a single with the same case i found on bing images

The only time I buy physical media these days is SACDs or those Super Deluxe box sets from bands/albums I really love and that seem worth it.
