Twin Peaks: The Return - very much a singular vision of a true artist, sticking to his guns, therefore not flawless but overall very impressive. Definitely one for fans of David Lynch (particularly his later work like Mullholland Drive, INLAND EMPIRE and some of his recent experimental shorts) more than fans of the original Twin Peaks series. Luckily I fall into both camps.

Re-watched most of Season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD in February. Have yet to conclude it though.
Season 2 is the one that transformed me into a fan of the show in the first place. This was way back in 1999. I LOVE Spike and Druscilla and Angelus was the perfect foe.

I finished watching Season 1 of Prime Suspect 1973 on DVD. I'd previously watched the season when it was aired on TV here, but got the DVDs for someone as a birthday present and we've been watching an episode most nights this week. Obviously I'd liked it enough on TV to decide it was worth getting on DVD. Who I got it for seemed to like it well enough too. I never saw the original Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren in the role of Jane Tennison, so I knew nothing about the character at all when I watched this show. Of course, this is a younger version of the character. She's played by Stefanie Martini (who I've previously seen in one or two other things). Having not watched the Helen Mirren series, I had nothing to compare Stefanie Martini's portrayal to - but I think that's a benefit, since she's playing a younger and less experienced Tennison. I thought she did a good job of portraying this young woman who is trying her hardest in a job that isn't very forgiving of women making mistakes - and she certainly makes a few, but that feels more 'realistic', as she's not some 'super perfect' cop who knows everything and is better at things than the more seasoned cops. We do see her being eager to learn, being observant and coming to conclusions that others might not have thought of (but in a believable way). I think she plays well off the other cops at the station. A lot of them are tough on her, but not to the point that you wish they'd catch a bullet. They take a while to warm up to her, but over the six episodes she proves herself to them and earns their respect - but it doesn't come easily. It's not just a matter of her getting something right and suddenly they're bowing before her superior knowledge. When she does earn their respect, it's because she's putting herself/her career on the line and backing them up when they ask for it (whether or not she completely agrees with it). Blake Harrison's DS Spencer Gibbs starts off seeming like the typical sort who doesn't think much of Jane, but by the end of the season he's not only shown depth as a character, but he's also grown to respect Jane and the two of them are really good together in the final episode (where Jane really comes into her own/steps up and takes on more responsibility than she's had up to that point. Stefanie Martini particularly shines in the final episode, given everything her character's had to deal with, she sells the emotion extremely well). The other characters aren't given tons of development, but they're enough to make the scenes at the station interesting. The one who has the most screentime would be Sam Reid's DI Len Bradfield. I was surprised to find out the actor is an Aussie. I've seen him in a couple of other things, and I completely bought him as this character. Not only his accent, but the type of character Bradfield is. He has a believable authority about him, but also shows that he's capable of making questionable decisions and the relationship he develops with Jane is an interesting one. I liked them together, and I don't think that them getting involved 'harmed' the show like it does in some other instances. I think it just brought more complexity to proceedings. Jane's home life is more frustrating than anything. Her mother especially. I can't say I blame Jane for reacting the way she does to the things her mother says. She's quite annoying. Her sister, while she might seem a bit annoying at times, is actually pretty understanding of her sister (much more than their mother, at least) and their sibling relationship is probably the best aspect of the scenes with Jane and her family. It was also somewhat funny/kind of odd to see Rosie Day playing Jane's sister, Pam, who is completely different to her meek/timid character of Mary in Outlander, which I'd seen her in prior to this show. Everything about this show looks really good. Its costumes, the sets, the vehicles and props - it all feels quite authentic. The use of memorable songs for the period also works/sets the 'mood' well, I think. It's very disappointing/a shame that the show apparently only lasted the six episodes. I thought it certainly deserved at least another season. Something that happens at the end of the season was rather unexpected, but kind of suggests that they must've had some inkling it wouldn't continue. It peeves me off, as there's so many rubbish shows that continue to be churned out, but this was a good quality show that was not given enough credit/enough of a chance. I guess that, like the character of Jane herself in the time period, this show wasn't treated with the respect it deserved to be. What I'll miss most, though, is Stefanie Martini in uniform - which she wore exceptionally well. I hope she finds another series which lasts, as I think she deserves it.

Red Dwarf - series VII (with the commentary on the entire time) I've been rewatching Red Dwarf repeats on the TV (it's about the umpteenth time they've run through the series here). Just finished series VII last night and will be starting the next one tonight. What are the commentaries like? Any good?

Yeah, they're pretty funny sometimes - I like hearing how they interact toward one another in real life, their anecdotes and how they laugh at the jokes. I've been binge-watching RD on DVD with the commentaries on for the past couple of weeks. I'm up to series VIII, ep. 8 - "Only the Good".

Well, I just finished the first season of the TV series Hard Sun last night on DVD. Previously I'd gotten to see the first episode on TV...but then the lousy channel which aired it here put the rest of the season on their site and it could only be viewed there, so I had to wait until the show was released on DVD before I got to see the remaining episodes - which was rather annoying. Agyness Deyn as Elaine Renko was the definite standout in the first episode (and the season as a whole, actually). I loved her fight with a young guy who turned out to be her son (one of the few times I agreed with Charlie Hicks in the episode was when he was asking what would cause her son to do what he did to her in that fight). It was such a great way to introduce Elaine Renko’s character. She really took a beating (complete with getting slashed repeatedly, stabbed in the gut and nearly being caught in an explosion). I appreciated how they presented her character as intelligent and taking initiative to work things out by herself. I also enjoyed the fact that she had a sense of humour – as evidenced by the note she left Charlie. The best part of the first episode, though, was the fight between Elaine and Charlie at the end. I know there are those who have ‘issues’ with female characters fighting male characters, but I thought they handled this fight pretty well. They didn’t have her doing ‘fancy flips’ or any of that rubbish. It was a scrappy, dirty, and she even resorted to using knuckledusters. While I do understand Charlie wanting to protect his family, I was firmly on Elaine’s side throughout the fight. The episode left me wanting to immediately see more and I gave it an 8/10. The rest of the season didn't quite live up to this^ first episode, though. There was time wasted on characters who I really didn't care about, things seemed to veer off course a bit from what was set up by the end of the first episode/beginning of the second episode, and the main adversary of both Charlie and Elaine was super-annoying - to the point where I kept wishing they'd just end her already (even in the final episode, they had her at gunpoint and I kept telling them to shoot...but they didn't hear me, sadly). Some good points about the show... Because it can't be said enough - Agyness Deyn was easily the stand-out in the first season of this show. She displayed so many different emotions (sometimes simultaneously) and was utterly believable with every single one. She was believably 'tough', but also could handle the emotional scenes exceptionally well. It was surprising to learn that she hadn't had much prior acting experience, as I thought she handled it like a pro. Just listening to her talk was rather captivating, I thought. Also good were the few amusing lines she managed to deliver in a perfectly deadpan manner as well as her various reactions to things other characters said. The fact that both lead characters would often get beaten up (half the time by each other), but they'd maintain their wounds/scars for multiple episodes impressed me. So many shows turn their lead characters into 'superheroes' (even when they don't actually have super powers) and they've miraculously healed from injuries that should've permanently crippled them, or at least left lasting scars, within an episode or two. That wasn't the case here. Both Charlie and Elaine always seemed to have some sort of wounds, and then just as they'd start to heal...they'd receive some fresh ones. While them only having batons at their disposal did raise some questions, I also kind of liked it (as every time they'd extend them, it was almost like igniting a lightsaber - that's what it reminded me of, anyway). Still, there were various occasions that carrying a gun really would've come in handy instead of having to grab one off someone else. Both characters were very interesting in the way they dealt with their own personal issues/problems they had going on. Things weren't 'simple' for either one of them. Both made questionable decisions, and towards the end of the season I was wondering how they were ever going to forgive each other for what they'd done/how they'd ever work alongside each other again. Thankfully, though, they came around to seeing things from each other's point of view and came to an understanding of sorts. I've recently seen a couple of movies that featured Jim Sturgess in them - which was a bit coincidental, as I was watching him in this show at the same time. I didn't always like Charlie Hicks, but I thought the actor did quite well in the role. While I did find the episodes after the premiere to be somewhat of letdown, on the whole I actually quite enjoyed the show and thought it gave us something a bit 'different' to the typical cop show. I honestly can't understand all the negative responses/reviews it has gotten. The end of the season did promise interesting things to come, so I hope the show gets at least another season - if only to see more of Agyness Deyn's DI Elaine Renko (as she rocks). On the whole, I'd give the show an 8/10 (though it would've been a higher overall score had the show maintained the quality of the first episode).

"The Young Pope" starring Jude Law. Need to watch it all over again, too! It was a fascinating series, despite getting mixed reviews by critics and viewers.

I just recently finished Season 3 of Outlander on Blu-ray. **spoilers below** Overall, I would say this season was 'better' than Season 2, but with Season 2 I had clear episodes which I liked best (the premiere, the 'Faith' episode, the one after 'Faith' and the season final. I also didn't mind the last few episodes leading up to the season final). With this season, I'm not sure if I could quite so clearly pick out 'favourite' episodes. I think I started liking Season 3 a few episodes into the season. There were some episodes here and there I wasn't too fussed on, but even those episodes weren't really 'bad' as such. The best thing about this season would probably have to be Claire and Jamie's reunion (the best moment being Jamie's reaction to seeing her and Claire's reaction to him fainting - every time I see it/think of it, it amuses me). The most disappointing thing of the season was the demise of BJR (I'd expected 'more'). And I wish the opening credits would go back to how they were in Season 1 - though I know that's probably never going to happen. As I've always said, even the not-so-great episodes of this show are better than the majority of episodes in most other shows I watch. There's just so much detail and care put into making this series - and it shows. The actors are all terrific and I think I might appreciate the season a bit more upon rewatch at a later time (just like I grew to like Season 2 a bit more on rewatch than what I had when I first watched it).
