More than just elements. Luke training Rey, Rey "remembering" Ahch-To in a dream, Rey's dark Force vision, Rey moving rocks, Rey trying to redeem Kylo Ren, opening scene rehashes Hoth escape, space chase, salt/ice planet, AT-AT battle with snow speeders/podracers, the throne room stuff, romantic kiss in 3rd act, new minority male character who betrays our heroes, etc. I Hated Episode 8. I can say this is the first Star Wars movie I despise. I mention this to express that I'm not defending the movie when I argue that Luke training Rey, in itself, isn't rehash. A Jedi training another Jedi isn't copying the prior movies - in fact, it's necessary to the mythos of Star Wars. I agree with you on a lot of your other points though. I included "Luke training Rey" because TFA and TLJ rehashed the hell out of the OT. More importantly, so many moments and aspects (secluded planet, huts, etc.) from these training scenes were clearly inspired by ESB. Yoda even shows up again in the middle film. Once again, he's in a humorous mood.

the guy made a lot more and better films than that. It is a bit unfair to judge him based off of one movie. Every artist has a hit-and-miss once awhile. The only time they typically don't is if they die young like John Cazale (although he wasn't a director and only an actor). Personally, I really like Howard's A Beautiful Mind, Ransom, Cinderella Man, and Frost/Nixon. A trilogy is three movies. He also directed that crappy whale movie, The Grinch, and something starring Kevin James and Vince Vaughn which was surely garbage. The movies you mentioned are solid enough, but his direction didn't particularly stand out in them. His direction wasn't even nominated for Apollo 13, and that was the frontrunner to win Best Picture that year. He seems the type where the quality of his movies depends entirely on the script.

He directs by the numbers. I hate his style of direction. It's too neat and tiddy. A beautiful mind was oscar bait from beggining to end aaaaargh
