I just finished watching The Rocketeer. I hadn't watched it in awhile and I was pleasantly surprised with how much fun it was. Johnston really had great control over the entire movie. It had that campy and pulpy feeling of an Indiana Jones movie with the same amount of heart. Obviously the action in The Rocketeer doesn't really compare to the action of an Indiana Jones flick, but it was still good.
It really made me wish that Johnston never would have announced his retirement from directing and he could have instead made Indiana Jones 5 or its sequel(s). I think that he still has the same talent now that he did when he first started. I think I would trust him to direct a better Indiana Jones movie right now than Spielberg could.

I love The Rocketeer, and I’d also love to give Johnston more work; he’s quite an impressive talent. I’m not exactly sure that Spielberg shouldn’t direct—I thought his direction on the last Indy just fine, as silly as the script was—but I know what you mean. (Actually, as much as I love Indy, it may be best just to leave the series where it is—we didn’t even need Crystal Skull.) I’m still hoping that Johnston reconsiders his promise to retire after Silver Chair.

I wholeheartedly agree. Either him or Kerry Conran.
