I watched it, i have it on DVD Brilliant show and yes there was controversial when it aired. In 1989, Terry Rakolta, from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, led a boycott[3] of the show after viewing the episode "Her Cups Runneth Over".[4] Offended by the images of an old man wearing a woman's garter and stockings, the scene where Steve touches the pasties of a mannequin dressed in S&M gear, a homosexual man wearing a tiara on his head (and Al's line "...and they wonder why we call them 'queens'"), and a half-nude woman who takes off her bra in front of Al (and is shown with her arms covering her bare chest in the next shot), Rakolta began a letter-writing campaign to advertisers, demanding they boycott the show. After advertisers began dropping their support for the show and whilst Rakolta made several appearances on television talk shows demanding the show's cancellation, Fox executives refused to air the episode titled "I'll See You in Court".[citation needed] This episode would become known as the "Lost Episode" and was aired on FX on June 18, 2002, with some parts cut. The episode was packaged with the rest of the third season in the January 2005 DVD release (and in the first volume of the Married ... With Children Most Outrageous Episode DVD set) with the parts cut from syndication restored. Ironically, viewers' curiosity over the boycott and over the show itself led to a drastic ratings boost in an example of the Streisand Effect, which Rakolta has since acknowledged. She has been referenced twice on the show: "Rock and Roll Girl",[citation needed] when a newscaster mentioned the city Bloomfield Hills, and "No Pot to Pease In",[citation needed] when a television show was made about the Bundy family and then was cancelled because (according to Marcy) "some woman in Michigan didn't like it". The conservative Parents Television Council named Married... with Children the worst show of both the 1995β96 and 1996β97 television seasons in its first two years in operation.[5][6] In 1996, the organization called the show the "crudest comedy on prime time television...peppered with lewd punch lines about sex, masturbation, the gay lifestyle, and the lead character's fondness for pornographic magazines and strip clubs."[5] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Married..._with_Children#Controversy

MWC was such a breath of fresh air when it first appeared after years of cuddly and insipid family sitcoms which were all the rage in the mid-80's. Absolutely subversive. Unfortunately, after a couple of good seasons it became very stale and formulaic, relying on the same half-dozen character jokes, e.g. Kelly's dumb, Al hates women (except hot ones), Bud jerks off all the time, etc.

In season 9, they have unleashed their imagination in an awesome "Pump Fiction" episode. And season 11 shined with sexual roleplay and self-directed irony in "The Juggs". But FOX became selfish and canceled them. What a puny plan.

I loved it until they brought that annoying brat "Seven" onto the show. They lost me after that.

I was a regular viewer, though I probably enjoyed it more as a late night 10 or 11 pm rerun than a Sunday night staple. As with many shows, the first 1-2 seasons & the latter 3-4 were kinda forgettable. Probably the show's zenith was around the time Kelly was still being portrayed as a bimbo - she was stupid but intelligent if that makes sense, & I suppose the same goes for the entire family. Grandmaster B was probably the last fun character angle, before Al got way softened up with his No Ma'ams or whatever club.
It shocked because it would say things no other show or movie would even want to try. Their visual gags had some fun Super Dave Osborne payoffs.

I loved MWC up till about the last two seasons, where it seemed to become just a caricature of itself.

I loved it until they brought that annoying brat "Seven" onto the show. They lost me after that. In norway, they always seem to skip past the first 6-7 seasons, and straight towards season 8 and upwards. They have been doing this for as long as I can remember, starting around 1996-97. I ended up buying season 1 and 2 on DVD a couple of years ago, and was shocked (but in a good way) of how good the series was in the beginning, and how dumbed down it later got, while I still enjoy the latter seasons, they seem to take the same route as other shows, like Seinfeld. Dumbing it down, and just keep on repeating the same jokes over and over. But if the comedy part is a bit down, now and then, I can always relax, knowing that Kelly will always be around to cheer me up. I never got to understand why or when the kid Seven showed up or why he went away, but I sure did not miss him. Terrible decision to include him, annoying as hell and I kind of like to think that as a punishment, he was sent to some looney bin or mental institution, spending the rest of his life there, screaming out his name in agony and frustration towards the producers who dumped him out of the show:

Seven was put in to add a "cute" factor to the show because Kelly and Bud were grown.

I remember them showing the early seasons on Norwegian tv. My bad then. I think I have seen a couple of episodes where Steve Rhoades is not showing up as a guest star, but a main character, and it must have been around season 3-4, but I was very surprised to find out that season 4, he only showed up now and then, as a guest, while Ted McGinley went on to do more than 170 episodes. Which is pretty damn impressive, as I always thought Rhoades was in for a longer time on the show. Sadly Viasat 4 is just standing still with season 8-10, but I rather watch old episodes of Married With Children that I have seen several times before, than on that shows like Two and a Half Men or even worse, The Big Bang Theory.

Seven was put in to add a "cute" factor to the show because Kelly and Bud were grown. Must have been a very desperate thing to try out, specially if it meant by boosting the ratings, but his "cute" factor did not seem to hit all that well with the fans, and I am glad he was taken out. I do remember a funny joke from one of the later seasons, where his mug/face were to be seen on some Milk or Juice box, and being described as a missing person or something, but none of of his family cared to even take notice.

That was a weird time on this show, and when I started tuning out, (although I've seen most episodes later in reruns). Season 6, Peggy and Marcie are both pregnant, but Katey Segal miscarries in real life. So they eliminate the pregnancy plotline later in the season by making it just a dream Al had. Then the next season, they add that kid to the cast, only to drop him later.
You made me laugh reminding me of the the "milk carton" incident! That was the key to this show: the horrible things they did and said to each other were so exaggerated and over-the-top that they couldn't be taken seriously. If it were realistic, everyone would hate the Bundy's and Al would go "Psycho-Dad" and kill them all! This show could NOT be made today because everyone are such sensitive PC snowflakes! No sense of humor. There is a new show that is good and comes pretty close called "The Detour". Check that out if you like Married With Children. Not the same, but funny AF!

Another similar show to this one was Unhappily Ever After. Only saw it a few times, but it appeared to be at least mildly entertaining from what I could tell. Substitute a Kelly Bundy for an in her prime Nikki Cox, and you've got a show folks

Unhappily Ever After was made by the same people who made MWC, if I recall correctly.

HUGE controversy when it aired - people either loved it or hated it with a passion. I even remember many "water cooler" moments at work with guys just crying with laughter the day after Al's antics. We all shared in the experience that marriage was not some blissful existence it was cracked up to be.
So many classic episodes I wouldn't even know where to start. Al imagining himself a fantasy private eye. Al and Peg break up. Al becomes a security guard at the school after losing his job. Al gets glasses and can see for the first time in a decade. The many family vacation episodes. I could probably name two dozen episodes that were just brilliant in their subversive hilarity.
For me, one stands alone as my favorite: The two part Xmas episode with Sam Kinison as Al's guardian angel, was just riotously funny from start to finish. I watch it every year at Xmas time, along with other Xmas classics: National Lampoons Xmas vacation, the Grinch, Charlie Brown, A Christmas Story, and so on.
It has become a tradition, required viewing Xmas classic.

That's one of my favorites. Al seeing how his family would've been without him was hilarious, especially Kelly as a straight A student and untouched.
