I'm very in the middle with this remake. It's like I can't decide if I like it or hate it. The cast is really good and so are some of the ideas, but it was like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be different from the original or if they wanted to stay close to the original, but in a different setting. Seriously there are so many callbacks to the original that it's almost distracting.
I feel like this would have worked so much better if they tried to just update the original. Keep it on mars, but make it serious. The director missed a really good chance of making mars look really cool in the remake. Instead he wanted to go in the lamest way and just make it take place on a futuristic earth.
While it's not the worst remake it's certainly not the best and it's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. 6/10

Like most recent remakes of classic movies, it is forgettable.

I agree with Taylor. The originals were much better. Footloose another example of fair to middling.
There's only one movie I've ever seen where the remake was either equal or better than the original....and I bought them both....."Cape Fear". Look it up and watch them both....I know you'll agree.

Yeah disliked this alot. The 1990 movie isn't one of my favorite Schwarzenegger movies but this had no imagination. No Mars, no aliens, hell it wasn't even rated R.

Yeah taking out mars was the final nail in the coffin. You know everyone wanted it remade just to see what they would do with the mars and the aliens. So when the director decided he didn't wanna go in that direction he spat in the face of the fans. It makes me wonder what Jj Abrams would have done with this.

Why would you rate a movie after only watching half of it?

I can 100% agree. In fact I'd also give it a 6/10. It seemed like a faithful remake but it didn't even know what it wanted to be. The setting is also pretty dull in contrast to the unique world the 1990 original gave us. Plus, too serious and no memorable one-liners!!

They could have gone in a very different direction, but instead it was like someone literally said "let's remake Total Recall. Keep everything the same just take out mars and the one liners.
