They’ve been done in movies, TV shows, stage plays, etc for ages, but character makeovers usually seem to involve not only looking different, but acting different too – ie. it’s not just about their physical appearance, but their attitude. Some pull it off, some don’t, and typically the characters learn a ‘lesson’ from the experience about how they’re better off ‘just being themselves’ (though not always). The first that which springs to mind is, naturally, Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle the movie My Fair Lady (1964). After her^, I automatically think of Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) in the movie Grease (1978). And I always remember this one because it amuses me (as it parodies the whole makeover thing in movies)... The miraculous makeover of Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) in Not Another Teen Movie from 2001.

Viva Maria! (1965) Bridget Bardot plays the radical tomboy daughter of an Irish anarchist. When her father dies she meets and pairs up with a circus singer togther they form a theatrical act and accidently invent the striptease show. When Bardot eventually lets her hair out of that newsboy cap, her makeover is underway...

By my count, Audrey appears to be the "makeover queen" so far, edging Bette out by one. Let's bring Bette even: Dead Ringer (1964) Dowdy Edith... ...impersonates glam Margaret While I'm at it, I'll go for the low-hanging fruit others left for the picking: Vertigo (1958) Kim Novak as Judy... ...and in her "Madeline" makeover
