A) Name a movie you were MOST looking forward to but it disappointed you so much...
B) Name a movie you REALLY thought you would HATE, and it was great.
C) Name a movie you had NO expectations for, just came across it, and now its one of your favorites.
D) Finally, name a film EVERYONE loves, and you HATE.
For Me:
A) "Superman Returns" (2006) (I followed that film on the internet back in 2005. The set pics, the rumors, etc. I was soooooooo pumped for my favorite Superhero to be on the big screen again. I remember being so PISSED I didn't sleep that night. Just lying in bed thinking about how it was NOTHING like I thought it would be.) Flash forward to today, I don't hate it. It's okay, but back in 2006, my expectations were too high and it crushed me like no other film crushed me. Mind you, it's not the worst film I've ever seen, just the biggest disappointment. I think thats why I liked Man of Steel, because I didn't get my expectations too high.
B) "AVATAR" (2009) (I saw the previews for this film and I thought, well, James Cameron waited 12 years following "Titanic" to make this? Blue people flying on dragons? It will flop" Boy was I WRONG. I avoided it for 2 weeks after its release, then people came to me and said "You have to see it, but in IMAX 3D!" So I did, and it was one of my favorite theater experiences of all time. It's not the best film ever, but man was it amazing to see in IMAX 3D and it is a good story.
C) "Lost in Translation" (2003) (I love Bill Murray films, but I never saw any of his Wes Anderson films, or this because in my late teens/early 20's, I didn't care as much for films like this. I wouldn't have appreciated it at age 17 as I did when I was an adult. When I was a kid/teen I loved "Ghostbusters" and "Groundhog Day" and "What about Bob?". When Movie Gallery/Blockbuster started going out of business I saw "Lost in Translation" on sale for $1.50. I thought "I'll buy this, it's the same price as renting a film, if it sucks, oh well. I LOVED IT. I watched it about 10 times that first month, always at night, late night. I still, to this day pop it in about every 3 months around 1am when I cannot sleep. It's a mood film. It's now one of my favorite films of all time, top 10.
D) "The Avengers" (2012) (Or in general the MCU as an entire franchise. I don't get all the fuss. I liked Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, but that is about it. I remember going to see "The Avengers" in theaters with my friend who was going nuts over it, he was like "YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM, IT BLOWS THE DARK KNIGHT AWAY! It's now the BEST Comic Book Film Ever Made!" and I saw it. I remember looking at my watch a few times thinking "Is this final act ever going to end?" He was like "What did I tell you?" and I said "What? That you made me waste 12 dollars?"
