I give it a 10/10. I think it's the best show ever.

9/10. One point deduction for the hideous 70's fashions.

10/10. One of the very few shows that never "jumped the shark." And I love seeing those hideous '70s fashions, and I wanted to live in that great apartment that Mary had in the first seasons, shag rug and all.

It was about a 7/10 for me. And I loved the Dick Van Dyke Show. This is classic, though.

Wow, so much dislike for what I've always thought was the best sitcom of all time. Oh well, this coming from somebody who finds "Shameless" to be repugnant.

Sure, you rate it 10/10, cause you've got spunk.
I'll go 8/10. I don't have quite so much spunk.

Maybe the fashions have aged badly (even though I think 70s fashions and disco rock!), but the show's central themes of friendship, love, work and finding your own way in life are timeless, and these qualities are what make the show the best of the best. Not to mention consistently superlative writing and a hugely talented ensemble cast portraying some of the most likeable, endearing tv characters ever. Also, and this is very important, I think, MTM makes me feel good, at peace, calm, warm inside, leaves me with a smile, whatever... It is a genuinely funny, witty comedy with a tender heart at its core. It was also, I am pretty sure, the first sitcom of its type. I just can't imagine what show has done all that before, or since.

10/10. I loved the show and grew up watching it with my Aunt. I also liked the 'Rhoda' spinoff show too.

Yeah Rhoda was a great show Though I prefer the later seasons after she wasn't married anymore. I also really enjoyed the show Phyllis. Too bad it only lasted 2 seasons but a very funny show also.

Jayman huh? I notice you have had a change of name. I never saw Phyllis 'cause I don't think it aired here in Australia and if it did it wasn't repeated like 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and 'Rhoda' were but I did see 'Lou Grant' which was another spinoff from 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and that went for five seasons and was repeated here a bit. Then the guy who played Murray went on to do 'The Love Boat' and that was very popular here. 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and 'Rhoda' were my favourites though and 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' was very historic at the time and influenced a lot of other shows. I don't watch 'Oprah' much but I remember seeing an episode where they had a reunion of the whole cast of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and there was this too.

Oh yeah lol I've used this name on other boards over the years so I figured I'd institute it here also . One thing about Phyllis was that it really wasn't repeated all that much in reruns so a lot of people never got to see it. Plus it was never officially released on dvd either. I bought the bootlegs of the series that were floating around that somebody recorded from tv. I enjoyed it. Her character was definitely toned down to be more likable and down to earth. And you got to see her daughter bess grown up too. I have watched Lou Grant in syndication when they showed it back in the 90's. My plan is to buy the whole series on dvd. It'll have to be the bootlegs because I don't think that was released either, but I think that is a really good show about Lou getting into the newspaper business and all that. But yeah the Mary Tyler Moore show was very historic in regards to the Women's movement. I actually did see that episode of Hot in Cleveland! The funny thing is I never used to watch it but then I stumbled on to it at like 4am one night and it was on lol. That was pretty cool.

The funny thing is I never used to watch it but then I stumbled on to it at like 4am one night and it was on lol. That was pretty cool. Ahhh. That explains it. There are a few TV shows that have never been released on DVD and Blu Ray and I don't understand why and one show my Aunt has been wanting to get on DVD for years is 'BJ and the Bear' and I always look for that for her when I am ordering DVDs online but whoever owns the rights for it refuses to release it and they released the first three seasons of 'Green Acres' over a decade ago and my Aunt was collecting them but then they just stopped and now they have started releasing them again and Season 4 came out in November last year, Season 5 in February and Season 6 is coming out next month and I think it must have been due to popular demand they decided to release the rest of the series. They stopped releasing the 'Diagnosis Murder' seasons on DVD for a while too but then released the rest of them later. 'VIP' is a show that had four seasons that were replayed here a lot but only one season has been released on DVD and it took ages for them to release the entire six seasons of 'Crossing Jordan' after they released the first one and they released a box set here that had all the seasons in it earlier this year but I heard that had something to do with the music rights and music rights have prevented some of our Australian TV Shows from being released in full on DVD too like 'Heartbreak High.''The Mary Tyler Moore Show' got played the most here out of the shows and it was very historic for being the first show to focus on the life of a single working woman and a lot of people don't realise how much the success of shows like 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', 'Charlies Angels', 'The Bionic Woman' and 'Cagney and Lacey' in the 70s and 80s changed the landscape for female lead shows and female lead Action shows in particular and they were one of the main reasons we had far more Action and Sci Fi TV shows with female leads than movies and the TV Industry embraced having female leads 'cause of previous success while Hollywood stayed behind for a long time.

This was an ongoing problem that I've posted about years ago with DVD releases. If they feel like it's not going to be a hot seller, sometimes they don't release on dvd. There were also many times where they'll release one season of a show and wait to see how the sales go, and if the sales aren't through the roof, they pull the plug and don't release anymore seasons. I can't even count how many times I've seen that happen. This is why I used to say screw them, and buy the bootlegs of series that weren't officially released. There are dvd sets with tv shows that were recorded from tv that are floating around. I have done that for many many series. Sometimes the quality is very very good, and for some series, not as good. But I'm not that picky about picture quality and as long as it's decent, I'm good with it. I have seen bootleg DVD sets of BJ and the bear floating around on a couple of sites over the years. I've never bought it myself. Green acres is pretty easy to get. But it's just if you're willing to get something that is not perfect quality.
I think you are correct about those series starring the women. ANd let's not forget "That Girl" which was also pretty historic.
