I rewatched Episode 3 recently and every time I do, I am reminded of how cold Obi-Wan is in this movie. He just leaves Anakin to burn to death on Mustafar! How anyone who considers someone else a friend/brother, could leave that person to die so horribly is beyond me. He could easily have put Anakin out of his misery.

Well, for a full-fledged Jedi Obi Wan was very emotional, and he clearly thought Anakin was dead when he left (at least Lucas claims so in the commentary).
But admittedly Obi Wan always had a borderline sociopathic side to him, especially when he turned out a big fat liar in the OT, and worse, would not even tell the truth when Luke was about to face Vader in Empire - a small "Luke, before you leave there is something crucial you ought to know, that Vader might well use against you...". Not to talk about being a blatant hypocrite about it in Jedi.
And don't get me started on the creepy Leia thing: Seeing Lukes libidinous fascination with hologram-Leia, and smiling approvingly at the unintentional incest and keeping silent even as a Force ghost, is beyond creepy.

How would George have explained it?

The flashback described in the original ROTJ script (and novelization) described Anakin actually falling into a pit on lava, making it more believable the Obi-Wan assumed Anakin was dead.
I think Lucas chose drama over logic in this case....

It is somewhat of a moral pop quiz, from a Jedi standpoint. It seems like something borne out of deliberate cruelty for ObiWan to leave Anakin to burning to death. And ObiWan even expresses his remorse over the "death" of their brotherly relationship. But there's the question of whether mercy killings are even allowable and part of the Jedi code. Also, several times in ROTS it's implied that Jedi take an oath to destroy the Sith. What the perimeters are in how that oath is carried out is not entirely clear. For example, was Mace Windu fulfilling his oath when he decided to raise his lightsaber to Palpatine to kill him, ignoring Anakin's point about it not being the Jedi way? Or was Windu behaving in a way that was more akin to the Darkside? ...and did ObiWan or not?

I think Lucas chose drama over logic in this case.... Why is it more logical to have Anakin fall into a PIT OF LAVA than what we got? How would he have survived that for literally an instant? "The Force"? Yikes. I prefer the much-more-logical and incredibly haunting scene that we got, with the fantastic Williams score to boot.

How would he have survived that for literally an instant? Exactly what Obi-Wan would have thought, which makes it much more logical for Obi-Wan to assume Anakin is dead....

Dude, it doesn't fucking work. And hinging it on Obi Wan "assuming he's dead" doesn't make it anymore "logical."
