So belief and focus are very important to success in using the Force. (According to pro TFA/TLJ fans other factors like training and experience make little or no difference). One of the primary reasons that Kylo fails is being distracted by inner conflict. It makes him unfocused and weak. This explains why he always fails against Rey despite training (if training even matters).
It's also factors into some Anakin's failures in the prequels. Even Yoda pointed out how Anakin was distracted by his attachment to his mother. And his attachment to Padmé caused conflict. His choices in how to handle it factored into his downfall.
Rey (through 2 films) has been obsessed with the identity of her parents and finding them. She has been portrayed as being constantly distracted by it. At times she didn't even want to be involved with a destiny that involved the Force. But naturally this is not a distraction to an untrained Force user like Rey whenever she has to compete against a trained, experienced Force user like Kylo. He is too weak from all of that inner conflict that Rey isn't weakened by... and all of that training and experience I guess!?!
