Something I noticed in the new, full trailer, that gives me some hope about the background on the two beloved characters. I admit, my knowledge of the old EU stuff was mostly from the comic books and I haven't thumbed through them in a few years. So I'm sorry if I get anything wrong or I'm fuzzy on details. But as I recall, Chewie and Han got to having the close relationship from the same incident that took Han out of flight school/etc. That Han refused to transport wookies as part of the slave-trade, for them to be sold in order to make money for the Empire, and as such Chewbacca considered that he owed young Han Solo a life debt. (For those who remember the Kevin Costner/Morgan Freeman ROBIN HOOD- basically akin to Robin & Azeem).
Now, in the new trailer we have a reference to Han being kicked out of the flight academy (which, correct me if I'm wrong- but wasn't it very Empire-aligned and there were pilots who went there for training and then defected to the Rebellion? Cause I believe that's what the guys Luke was friends with back on Tattooine, had done) for having a mind of his own. Also, when he is asked if he wants to be part of what is going on, he translates for Chewie, suggesting that they've been together for a while at least at that part of the movie. Even the reaching over and putting his big, furry hand on Han's shoulder near the end, seems to suggest they've already been friends for a while (he didn't express fondness that way with most of the other characters, in the first movie he had with each of them) in this new movie.
I could have this all wrong, they could end up meeting in a bar and Han saves Chewie from Boba Fett, and two hours later they meet Woody H.'s character, and they go on this big adventure. And that could be the whole movie. However, I'm hopeful that they've got the backstory in there that explains this deep, abiding, snarky friendship between the two. Besides, it's Ron Howard, Opie wouldn't let us down.
