In a week or two, with only about $ 3 million to go, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN will likely surpass CHICAGO as the 3rd largest grossing musical on the domestic side (USA and Canada)...and is presently the largest-grossing original movie musical also on the domestic side. Forbes.com's analysis of current box office standing -- Media outlets have looked into the reasons for the unexpected box office success of this movie musical. The New York Times asked its readers for the reasons for the phenomenal support of the movie ( including repeat patronage)...and have published the responses ( link provided in the article). www.nytimes.com/2018/02/09/movies/why-do-you-love-the-greatest-showman.htmlBBC.com also looked into the reasons for the success of the movie in the UK ($ 51 million currently) www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-43385034EW.com shares its analysis of the successful run of this movie musical ew.com/movies/2018/02/27/greatest-showman-box-office-titanic/?utm_campaign=entertainmentweekly&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=socialI would add looking at social media reactions as well as reader reviews on RottenTomatoes/ IMDB/ Amazon readers relating to the movie -- they disclose the pure sentiment of why they enjoyed the movie and even went back for more. There have also been so many covers of the song and dance numbers, including public performances. It looks like the appeal is across all ages/gender/borders. Also interesting is the demographic analysis on IMDB, yielded by some 80,000 raters, with the majority ( approx. 61%) of the ratings divided into age and gender profiles. There is also some indication of whether the rating came from USA or non-USA sources. www.imdb.com/title/tt1485796/ratings?ref_=tt_ov_rt

It's a good movie with good marketing and good word of mouth.

It's a good movie with good marketing and good word of mouth. The old fashioned way. Nothing quite like it.

I liked COCO too but how it won BEST ORIGINAL SONG over TGS is rather remarkable.
