hi224 #2 (the gay marriage one) is verifiably untrue; matelotage was not a sexual relationship. The large majority of historians now discount (and believe debunked) B.R. Burg’s pure guess that even a few pirates were homosexual. (In fact, the article to which you linked rather contradicts itself by saying that pirates in matelotage shared female prostitutes—unless they were bisexual pirates? But then that would contradict Burg’s argument anyway.) Vide Dr. David Cordingly’s chapter on “Storms, Shipwrecks, and Life at Sea” (particularly pp. 100-103), from Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates. In fact, I recommend the whole great book. An excellent guide. EDIT: Many of those “facts” seem tailored only to fit modern sensibilities. For better or worse, I doubt the veracity of most of them. For example, there were not “many” female pirates; Anne Bonny and Mary Read were only conspicuous exceptions that prove the rule (and not particularly successful pirates, at that, tying their fortunes with the very unsuccessful Calico Jack. Anne Bonny was never a first mate. The pirates instantly knew Anne and Mary were women—obviously, living in close quarters. We simply don’t know much about either woman’s early life, as our only evidence is from Charles Johnson’s unreliable A General History of Pyrates (1724). And it was indeed rare for pirates to bury treasure, but Kidd was not the only one. Sorry to be the debunker, but I’m fascinated by the history of Golden Age piracy, and I’m a bit annoyed that that article parrots erroneous information.

That’s great, hi224 ! It’s a subject I love too. As I wrote above, I highly recommend Cordingly’s Under the Black Flag—best and most concise book on the subject I know. If you also like the fiction of it, I recommend Tim Powers’s On Stranger Tides and Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes—in addition to Sabatini et al. (and the Disney ride! ).
