Slayer was my favorite band at one point.
These days I'm not so much into pure thrash, but I still enjoy bands that have thrash influences.

It's kind of a dead sub genre in the sense that most of the pure thrash bands out there are the old school bands that have been around for like 30 years. There's not many new thrash bands out there starting up. THere's some out there, but there's really no thrash scene like there was. Just the old bands touring sometimes. I thought thrash would outlive the other subgenres but the opposite happened.

Consider for example the album below. The song "Burn the Temple Down" is slow and heavy, "Possessor" is thrash, "Scaling Lies" is a power ballad, and final song "The Ominous Black" is like a microcosm of the album as a whole. FINAL SIGN - Hold High the Flame

I was listening to 'Darkness Descends' earlier this week. My favorite thrash bands include early Sepultura, Kreator, Exodus, Anthrax, Sodom, Sacrilege. Early Voivod and Bathory if they count, though Bathory is clearly not pure thrash.

Timing had a lot to do with it in a way. It got cut short once that Nirvana album came out and the whole alternative grunge thing took off. That destroyed the metal scene. I just never figured out why death metal made the comeback and stayed and thrash didn't. The thrash scene was hot up until 1990. Way hotter than death metal, and then it took a nosedive. Black metal sort of re invented itself with the second wave so I guess that made sense.

Thrash is easily my favorite sub genre of metal. Some of my favorite thrash metal bands are Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Kreator, Dark Angel, Destruction, Anthrax, Megadeth, Death Angel, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Vio-Lence, Demolition Hammer, Nuclear Assault, Voivod, and Metal Church.

Besides the big 4, I used to listen to Death Angel a lot.
