Seems a shame there isn't a M*A*S*H thread/board, so I'll create one. Unless there is and I didn't see it.
Anyway, Frank or Charles?
Blake or Potter?
Favorite episode?
Favorite character?
EDiT: Here's a link to some of the old threads from the IMDb MASH board, peruse at your leisure for inspiration! And again, thank you to whoever did all that. Awesome.

My sentiments exactly, Geode. MASH might be cult had it gone off the air after its third season, when McLean Stevenson left the show, and he was probably the most popular player on the series at the time, but the golden age of the show from a ratings standpoint had just begun. It became a long running major mainstream hit at the level of (like it or not) The Waltons and Bewitched.

I could have sworn we already had a M*A*S*H topic, but I will go ahead and post my response.
• Charles. The shtick with Frank was getting tiresome by the fifth season. All he would do is cry and moan about Houlihan's fiancée, Donald Penobscott. I am sorry about the way Larry Linville departed the show, though. I'm kinda glad that Frank wound up working stateside for a VA hospital, even though he was hardly one who could be classified as a surgeon. At least he had a better sendoff than Blake.
• Potter. He was always a better Commanding Officer than Blake. Even Blake would complain too much about missing his family. I wanted to throw a brick at the T.V. whenever he mentioned his wife, Lorraine. We get it. You were drafted. There's a war going on. You're being held there against your will by the federal Government. You miss your family. So do the thousands of other servicemen and women, a lot of which came home in a body bag.
• I know you didn't ask this but, I prefer Trapper over B.J. Wayne Rogers handled the more serious episodes pretty well. I could have seen him staying for a few more seasons. B.J. was fine, but boasting over being such a dedicated and faithful family man was wearing thin.
• Season 1, Episode 24 - Showtime (1973). It's a terribly underrated episode, and deserves a lot more recognition.
• Radar. He seemed so youthful and innocent. He was really the only major character to have a two-part episode dedicated to his departure. Everybody else was kinda thrown under the bus. I still get a lump in my throat whenever I watch Good-Bye Radar Parts 1 & 2 (1979). The only good thing that came of this was Klinger not wearing women's clothing anymore. Even that joke was becoming played out by the eighth season.
• I have to vent about my least favorite episode(s), such as the Hawkeye-centric ones, more specifically Season 7, Episode 2 - Peace on Us (1978). I despise and loathe it. Hawkeye doing what he did would have definitely gotten him the boot, even possibly being imprisoned in Leavenworth. Nobody in their right mind would condone such behavior, much less celebrate it. I don't care who Col. Potter knows or what connections he has. I honestly do not believe that he would risk his lengthy Military career over Hawkeye's antics. The moment he hopped into that jeep, Col. Potter should have had him charged with desertion to cover his behind.
BTW, where in the world was the Military Police? He shouldn't have even been able to come within 50 feet of the peace talks without being shot on site, especially by the North Korean Military since they're known for being ruthless. I know it's not suppose to be taken seriously, but at least make it semi-believable. Maybe a slap on the wrist or something that would put a blemish on his record. This is one episode where they made Col. Potter look like an incompetent CO.
Edit: Oh, I remember now. He told the MPs that some General called for a doctor, so that's when he barged in. Eh, still a stupid plot anyhow.
This episode was just flat out stupid, all the way down to dying everything red because it's such a symbolic color! Really??? Ugh. I used to joke about the title of the episode being called "Piss on Us", because that's exactly what Alda and the writers did, LOL!

I could have sworn we already had a M*A*S*H topic, but I will go ahead and post my response. You may be right...I didn't see it anywhere else but it may be under a category I didn't see or check out. Either way I'm glad you weighed in on mine, and if you ever see another please link me here so I can read it too! I love MASH and have been catching up every wkd with the massive amount of marathoning one of the stations has been doing. I wish I could remember which station so I could say but I don't recall. I should have checked this yesterday when I was actually watching it and I could have put it in.

I wouldn't have considered this show to be cult TV, more classic TV. ....mmmmm.....I think it could be both? I do remember the MASH board on IMDb being one of the busiest boards for TV shows that weren't current. Friends was another one, but for MASH to be over for so long and still generate fairly constant discussion is pretty impressive!
Interesting...what would need to be in place for a show to be considered "cult" status? Would they need to have action figures? Did MASH ever have action figures?

Character: Col. Flagg Yeah, Col. Flagg was great... And remember, he can "Booby Trap Nurses"!I preferred the later seasons with... Colonel Potter, Charles Emerson Winchester, & B.J. Hunnicutt... And Major Margaret Houlihan (spelling?). I hated young "Hot Lips" who was loyal to Frank. Every once in awhile I did like Frank Burns though... My favorite episodes, the ones I remember most, involved... - The last scene in the final episode with Henry Blake. They get the news he was killed, and the room was dead quiet as they were mourning... Someone dropped a metal tool on the floor. I understand that was a goof, but they kept it in. Just so powerful. - Radar looks in on Hawkeye in surgery to "say" goodbye, and Hawkeye gives him a salute. - B.J. Hunnicutt, breaks down because he is at war... and I think he found out his daughter Erin called Radar "Daddy". as I recall, BJ says he hated Radar while he was in this state of mind. - The episode where everyone had to evacuate to a cave. Hawkeye was claustrophobic, and Margaret was afraid of the noise of explosions. - There was an episode with Klinger, I think the one where people with a certain heritage, like Klinger, got sick from a drug... Klinger made a statement similar to this... He might try everything he could to get out of the Army (Section 8), but would never fail to due his duties or responsibilities, especially those for Colonel Potter. - The final episode. Hawkeye goes nuts, because a woman killed her crying baby, to keep the enemy from finding them. Hawkeye & B.J. give Colonel Potter, sitting on his horse Sophie, a real salute as a goodbye present.

A while back, I purchased the special 3-Disc DVD package for "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen". The set included a couple of anniversary specials. After seeing this thread, I wanted to watch those. Featured in one of those, is this amazing Quote:
Colonel Potter: "If they can invent better ways to kill each other... Why can't they invent a way to end this stupid war?"
That was said on the show around 40 years ago...
It is a shame, that the question still remains valid, even today...
Will it take another 40 years, before people on this ball of mud, figure out how to get along with each other?

Right, Geode. It's too, if you'll excuse a word seldom used these days, bourgeois, to be cult, was made in the mainstream manner. Cult shows nearly always have something off the wall or very different about them. They need not be David Lynch different, just a little too off the beaten path for prime time.

...I love this sitcom:
That said, here is a factoid. A laugh track was used in all episodes except for those scenes filmed inside the OR.
The first appearance of Harry Morgan (before he became Sherman Potter) is hilarious.
A favorite character was the helicopter pilot portrayed by Billie Green Bush with the ten gallon hat.
Though Hawkeye always had good intentions, he was occasionally an obnoxious SOB.
Loudon Wainwright should have been on more episodes.
Radar was a pain in the ass...

They used to have M*A*S*H beer in the 1980s, LMAO!: It's hard to categorize M*A*S*H since it does have a cult following, as well as being considered a classic. I do remember the IMDb board being fairly active. The last discussion I had was of AfterMASH that ran from '83 - '85. Of course, it crashed and burned since a lot of the main cast moved on to other projects. They had the right idea, but it wasn't executed properly. This might explain why it was never released on home video. I had to watch it on YouTube from somebody that recorded the episodes back then.

The IMDB board for MASH was pretty active. I think AfterMASH should have started with Potter taking over a badly run hospital in a rough place like The Bronx. The war was always providing the tension that drove MASH. Potter could have taken over, and said, "I need to put the gang back together in order to get a handle on this place." The pilot could have been him tracking down as much of his old staff as he could. A sleepy VA hospital didn't work as a substitute for the Korean War. The show could have been ER before there was an ER.
