Can an atheist be spiritual? Well, some atheists do choose to still follow some religions, despite not believing in God or gods, so I suppose they can be. Some religions which atheists do still follow: Judaism, Buddhism, Scientology, etc.

If the spirituality doesn't have anything to do with gods, then yes.

Yes, but that doesn't make it any less ridiculous than believing in magic sky genies.

Yes, but that doesn't make it any less ridiculous than believing in magic sky genies. The ridiculousness depends on what we mean by spiritual. I like how in German geist can mean both spirit and mind, and considering spirituality as just a way of talking about our mental well-being isn't so ridiculous.

What do you reckon to someone like Sam Harris who is militantly atheist yet sings the virtues of transcendental meditation?

I don't care much for Harris in general, but I don't have a problem with meditation. It seems harmless at worst.

"Spiritual" seems to be used in a million different ways by a million different people colloquially. So we should probably try to better nail down just what we're asking.

Can an atheist be spiritual? You might need to define spiritual.

A meaningless question has no answer. The OQ is entirely a matter of words with no clear meaning.

Can an atheist be spiritual? You might need to define spiritual. My love of bacon is on a spiritual level. It's almost religious.

spiritual as in actually following the dictates and desires of a spiritual so-called enlightened master? or spiritual as in rubbing your slippers together and wishing that wicked witches had more important things to do then inhabit the world you are in?

Sure, though "spirituality" can mean a number of different things. Technically speaking all "atheism" means is lack of belief in God. You can still be an atheist and believe in irrational nonsense (Bill Maher's anti-vaccer stance come to mind)
