Top Hat (1935). Fred Astaire in a comedy of errors with Ginger Rogers. Delightfully absurd plot, wonderful songs and dance numbers. My favourite line is said by Erik Rhodes as Alberto, the dress designer: "Never again will I allow women to wear my dresses."

The Notorious Landlady (1962). Jack Lemmon is an American diplomat posted to London who finds lodgings with a woman (Kim Novak) who is suspected of murdering her husband (no body has been found). Naturally Lemmon and Novak fall for each other. Fred Astaire in a non dancing role is Lemmon's boss, and Lionel Jeffries is the police inspector trying to solve the case. Crazy but quite fun.

Psycho 1960, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, The movie + and a nearly 90 minute insightfull and interesting documentary including interviews with Janet Leigh. Where it kills the rumour that Saul Bass directed the famous shower scene. In older movie encycopediias it said Bass directed the shower scene. Maybe the first movie to show a toilet seat, at least in a mainstream movie? One of my favorite movies, even if it's been 10 years since last time.

Romance on the High Seas (1948). Romantic comedy with a crazy plot. A wealthy woman (Janis Page) who is supposed to be going on a cruise to Rio decides she wants to stay in New York and spy on her husband who she doesn't trust, so she hires a singer (Doris Day) to pretend to be her and go on the cruise. Meanwhile her husband (Don DeFore) , who doesn't trust her, hires a private detective (Jack Carson) to go on the cruise and keep an eye on his wife. Of course Doris Day and Jack Carson end up falling for each other and it all gets very complicated. Great fun.

HOLD THAT GHOST 1941 -- Haven't seen this in a looong time. All I remembered was that it had a funny actress and there's a good comical dance scene with her (Joan Davis). Lou Costello has a particularly amusing shtick with a water-tasting gag after Bud Abbott remarks that it is probably poisoned.
THE DEAD DON'T DIE -- 1975--the creepy tv-movie starring George Hamilton and Ray Milland. Not the new one!

The Family Way (1966). A comedy drama set in a north of England town. A newlywed couple (Hayley Mills and Hywell Bennett), have trouble with their marriage as various misfortunes befall them, not helped by living in the kind of neighbourhood where everyone knows everyone else's business. John Mills and Marjorie Rhodes are outstanding as Hywell's parents. There are many fascinating period details, outside toilets, baths taken in a tin tub in front of the kitchen fire etc. Not to mention the jobs done by Hayley and Hywell which are now obsolete (she works in a record shop, he is a cinema projectionist). There is a lot of humour, but the ending is very poignant.

THE BAT 1959 -- Who is a scarier witch--Margaret Hamilton or Agnes Moorehead? It's a tough choice. AM sure has a sinister look. But here even though she is a benign crime novelist, I kept thinking how intimidating she could be. I was surprised to see Gavin Gordon (THE Gavin Gordon? From The Bride of Frankenstein?)? I wondered what he was up to after that and I suspect I have seen him in other things and just not recognized him. I have to admit I figured the killer was....
SALEM'S LOT-the movie. I prefer the shorter version to the mini-series even though it is a little rushed. Some classic jump scares in this. One of the best is where Geoffrey Lewis shows up at the dinner table. Some have said David Soul was miscast but I think his mellow attitude made the scary moments more interesting-especially when he begins to freak out as the vampire is rising from the table and he is shouting "Bill!" You also get the impression he may not be up to the task of stopping the vampires so it makes the staking scene all the more creepy. Lance Kerwin's Mark is also a fascinating character to look at now since he represents a kind of geek culture prototype--the eccentric town outsider whose peculiarities actually help his survival.
My favorite scene is where Barlow reveals himself in the kitchen and James Mason is taunting the priest.
This was a pretty damn scary film to see on tv back in 79-especially the kids at the window. And the music. This was vampires being given the Exorcist treatment. There was another vampire movie from the same time--starring Richard Lynch and Jason Miller, but from what i remember was too old-fashioned by comparison. Special shout out to the poor man's Charles Durning, Kenneth McMillan.

A Night at the Opera (1935). Some wonderful funny scenes, but rather too much singing and romance. But the cabin scene never fails to amuse.

The Man Who Could Cheat Death 1959 -- I understand this is a remake of a 1940s film but I have not seen the original. Anton Diffring replaces Peter Cushing who was supposed to star.
Terror Creatures from the Grave 1965 - Barbara Steele in another eurogothic dream-like horror story.

How to Steal a Million (1966). Amusing comedy with an art forger (Hugh Griffith) whose daughter (Audrey Hepburn) is trying to get one of his works back before it is discovered to be a forgery, enlisting the help of Peter O'Toole who she thinks is a thief but is actually a detective.
