I never got to see this show but if it starred Broderick Crawford it can't be all bad. Has anyone here seen it and have any thoughts about it?

Yes, it's a FUN cop show. I used to watch it all-the-time on This. Some or all of the episodes are available online. Clint Eastwood is in an episode. CHECK-IT-OUT!! At the end of the episode, BC would come on and give a short message about things such as the dangers of driving drunk and speeding, etc...

It's a very good show, though of its time (black and white, half-hour cop procedural, sort of, radio-style narration, generic writing, etc.). If one has a taste for period TV series HP is a great one to watch. It also offers, for the curious viewer, as in curious about other things than the story on the screen, the show showcases a rural and small town inland California very unlike the more sprawling urban-suburban state of today. Lots of small stores, community banks, little strip malls; and people dressed in "dungarees", rural speech patterns; slower, more laconic than what is accustomed to hearing today even among country folk.

Watched Season 1 and liked it. Realistic scripts, not just chase and shootouts, so it's similar to Dragnet in that way. Have Season 2 waiting for me to pickup at my library.
You have to either like or get used to Broderick Crawford's hectic pace and style to enjoy a full season.

I posted this review on the Classic Film weekly thread last weekend. Highway Patrol S.1, Ep. 13 “Escort” December 26, 1955. This almost legendary 30-minute police series ran 4 seasons from October 1955 to June 1959. Oscar winner (for 1949) Broderick Crawford stars. In this episode, a crusading Senator is targeted for death by a gangster his crime commission is investigating. Dan Mathews (Crawford) must get the Senator safely to the commission hearing and catch the Bad Guy in the act of attempted murder. And, yes, Crawford and cast say “10-4” multiple times. Crawford dominates every thing with his gravely voice and imposing presence.

I watched the show when it was originally first broadcast. I was quite young and was living with in my grandmother's house along with my parents and older brother. My brother and I really liked the show, but it came on after our bed time. Fortunately my mother and father commonly went out during the evening it was on and grandma let us watch it. Both my brother and I can still recite the opening narration. I started to do so at lunch with friends about a month ago when I brought the show up in conversation but got a protest before I could start so spared them. None of them remembered it but they are all somewhat younger than me. Broderick Crawford hosted SNL in the late 70s and they did a "Highway Patrol" skit. Many of us Baby Boomers remember the show fondly.
