I also think movies should be 'rewarded' somehow or at least acknowledged more for not releasing solely during awards season.
Gladiator won its year in part I seem to remember because it staked a claim for another film to take its place... & after months, there wasn't a better choice left. That's kinda ridiculous - here's the prize if we don't find something probably better than you.

As well as Get Out, there were Lady Bird and Three Billboards on the Best Picture list and various other comedies down-ballot.
I agree that quality comedy is sometimes given short shrift, but choosing the likes of Bridesmaids to represent its year is hardy going to be applauded in the long run.

Is there a lot of time and effort put into the cinematography of a comedy? What about set design, costumes, the score or sound effects editing?
One category comedies could be getting more nominations in is writing. |

that's why all these fault in our stars crap wins. people make those movies to tug at heartstrings and to remind people that only drama fiction is worse than their lives.
they are too stupid to realize that they are stupid for paying $ to cry. you can do that for free.

If comedy is going to honored with Oscar recognition, it at least needs to be of an intelligent, clever, biting, layered and ironic kind of humor. What types of comedy is MacFarlane referring too, Police Academy style of films; Adam Sandler Waterboy type comedies; his Ted movies? if tyler perry's crap ends up being even nominated i will kill myself. i think something like there's something like mary is worthy. office space, space balls, the princess bride... things like that. |

I think it also is a victim of the movie business and celebrity sighting being much less unique than it once was.
In the old 6 channel universe the only time you would see a movie star was in a movie, in a tv broadcast, or some promotional interview.
The Oscars were always political, but at some point the politics surpassed the entertainment aspect.
Recognizing more comedies is not going to improve its audience if the political grandstanding remains intact and I do not think they can retreat from it.

Another thing too--so the last telecast was one of the lowest in history.
Now, if the advertisers really have the power we are told, they should be storming into Hollywood offices and telling them to smarten up.
Yet I haven't heard of that happened, which suggests the advertisers do not have the power that is claimed, or they don't care. I thought money was the whole point?
I get the impression that money generation is not as important as the politics.

I think serious movies are just generally more interesting than comedies.
with that said... there are some quality comedies out there but in terms of straight-comedies that stand out tend to be few and far between as most of these kinds are a dime-a-dozen as a decent percentage of the comedies that do stand out tend to be some sort of comedy/drama (or the like) mixture.
so at the end of the day... Oscars are made more for serious movies than laugh-out-loud comedies which are largely a dime-a-dozen.

I guess MacFarlane is still bitter over the fact that his A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST-14' wasn't nominated for best picture. Several of the picture nominees this year had comedic undertones, even if black humor, so I don't know what he's really going on about. I think he's just a bit of a whiner. This is like the 3rd thing I've heard him complain about in the last year, all regarding perceived unfair treatment of himself or his work. |

. [/p][/quote] That's a good point. Most comedies are flatly shot and cheap looking because no one is really paying attention to the quality of filmmaking. I think people also measure movies by their "importance". If a movie gets an emotional reaction, has something to say, or is groundbreaking in some way, they're "important". Some comedies fit that bill, but those aren't the kinds of comedies these people are talking about. In fact, if a comedy gets too smart and well made, they stop considering them comedies - like Fargo. Then there was the Get Out controversy, a movie I saw as a pretty dark comedy, but people were flabbergasted it got nominated as such at the Golden Globes. |

Yes, absolutely. The Academy members has to believe that the Oscars are "important" and if they acknowledge comedies as worthy, then they feel they are going to lose credibility. Most of the movies that get BP nominations look very boring to me. And the nomination for "Get Out" was 100% PC geared. The move was all so transparent, it was almost creepy. The Academy members are hypocrites. But I guess when you get to that kind of stature/power in life, hypocrisy is going to be one of life's bitter pills. |

I've always thought they should have something like only being able to nominate one movie released from any given month so you don't get all the oscar bait thrown in last minute between Thanksgiving and Christmas |

I don't think comedies like Blockers, Game Night, or Tag should be getting nominations, but I think there are actually plenty of decent comedies that deserve a look.
From 2018 alone there is Sorry to Bother You, Crazy Rich Asians, Eighth Grade, Love Simon, Can You Ever Forgive Me, BlackKKKlansman, Blindspotting, and The Sisters Brothers.
