I saw Kong: Skull Island last night and, as you can probably guess from the title of this post, I did not enjoy it. My biggest problem with the film is the deaths of the characters. Not necessarily how they died, but their deaths not working with the story. I disliked so many of them that I wanted to put this quick list together. Obviously there will be spoilers.
5) Victor Nieves - John Ortis
I presume that him being plucked from the boat was meant to create a tone that the main characters were still in danger, but how these tiny "birds" just plucked him & slice him up was implausible and pretty silly. It would have worked if an action scene followed his death with the gang being swarmed by those things. But he just simply dies. As such it just felt like the filmmakers wanted to get rid of him.
4) Bill Randa - John Goodman
It was like the writer just lost interest in the character half way through. Earlier we got an interesting back story from the guy and his history with this island, He is then is killed off unceremoniously and without consequence. Hell, his college didn't seem to care or even notice for that matter. His character clearly had something to add to the plot, so his loss was pretty annoying. Also, how was the camera flash going through the monster body?
3) Jack Chapman - Toby Kebbell
Earlier Chapman had a scene in which he witnesses Kong nurse his wounds and subsequently fight a giant squid. The only apparent reason that scene existed was to shoehorn another fight into the movie. The scene genuinely felt like Chapman was seeing the "humanity" in Kong which would subsequently affect the story. But no, he gets axed off in his very next scene, basically turning him into a McGuffin for his finds to search for. He could have contributed to the climax of the film in which Packard is forced to stand down. It would have been a nice subplot. Like Randa he had something to contribute to the story, but for some reason he had to die.
2) Preston Packard - Samuel L Jackson
In this case, the actual death is stupid. The other selections are more about how the death functioned within the story. But here it is the actual death that is the problem. Kong just pounds him. No tension. No sense of victory or tragedy. He just swatted away like a mosquito and is forgotten. His death could have been more visceral or he could have been involved in the fight between Kong and the Lizard(maybe even coming to his senses and helping Kong). But again, like with many other characters, once his purpose was served, he was discarded.
1) Cole - Shea Whigham
What was the point of this scene? The character tries to sacrifice himself for the others by holding grenades and letting the monster eat him. A noble act, but fails miserably. And that's it. You could take this entire segment out of the film and no one would notice. His sacrifice could have injured or delayed the monster. Or he could have succeeded, but with the grenades having no effect. That would have shown how tough the monster was. That would have had some effect on the story. I really want to know why this scene was written. Was it supposed to be funny? I didn't laugh. I facepalmed.
Anyway those are my thoughts. If you liked the movie, that's cool. I just wanted to put this out there to see if anyone agreed with me. Thanks for reading.
