I agree with you about ‘Carrie.’ I meant to put that in the line about bad remakes when I was going back to add other remakes and put it in the wrong section but ‘The Ring’ was far more successful than the original Japanese movie and got a lot of great reviews. It was one of the most popular Horror movies of the early 00s and launched Naomi Watts to the top. ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ was widely liked and breathed new life into a franchise that had been dead for a long time. It is featured on a lot of lists of best Horror remakes of all time and was one of the most successful Horror movies of the 00s which lead to more sequels and ‘The Shining’ is a matter of personal tastes but when the author who is one of the most successful authors of all time (and considered the greatest writer of the past century by many journalists) calls your movie adaption shit and an insult to his novel you have done something very wrong. I get that some people like it but as a Stephen King fan who loved the novel I can see why Stephen had a problem with it. Hopefully the ‘Doctor Sleep’ movie will be better than both the previous ‘Shining’ adaptions. Stephen King fan as well. It's been a while since I saw the Shining film and the mini series, but I recall liking the TV version more. Haven't seen the Carrie remake. Loved the original. I like the It movie that just came out though the mini series was also good. I also want to see a remake of the Langoliers. While the mini series was accurate, the acting was mostly cheesy. I liked the 2009 Children of the Corn better than the 1984 version. I have mixed feelings about the 1979 and 2004 Salem's Lot miniseries. The radio drama adaption of the BBC is superior to both.

Not usually no, but in rare cases like John Carpenter's The Thing and It (2017), yes there have been remakes that surpassed the original.

I believe that William Friedkin's Sorcerer(1977) surpasses Cluzout's original, although I would have to rewatch the original to really confirm it.

The Hills Have Eyes remake is much better than the original imo.

It's rare, but it does happen. Only in a minority of cases, however.
The Thing (1982) and The Amityville Horror (2005) would be two examples that immediately come to mind.

I'll probably be alone in this but I think the remake of Breathless with Richard Gere is better than the original with JP Belmondo. I don't think the remake is particularly good. It's more that I think the original is pretty bad. Belmondo's character has no appeal and Jean Seberg is utterly lifeless. Gere displays charm and Kaprisky oozes sensuality.
Original – 5/10
Remake– 6.5/10

I would love to see a remake of 'The Langoliers' too. We have the miniseries as part of a DVD double pack that came with the miniseries of 'The Stand' and were a few months ago after we re-watched 'The Stand' and I liked it and feel it could be improved on if they made a remake of it and with all the remakes of Stephen King movies that are said to be in development now like 'Pet Sematary', 'Firestarter', 'The Stand' I could see it happening one day. I would love to see a new movie of 'Needful Things' too 'cause the last one was horrible and Stephen King has called it the worst movie adapted out of all his novels and has said he wants to make it himself.

I liked The Stand as well. High production values but due for a remake agree.
Firestarter was also good. Pet Sematary was all right, but the book was better (it's my fave King novel actually). There was also a Tommyknockers TV, but it's been so long since I watched I can barely remember it. I also like the movie versions of the short story Night Flier and the Bachman novel Thinner.
The less said about Needful Things the better. They left out Ace Merrill for Pete's sake.

I very much like The Thing (1982); but don't consider it an actual remake since the 1951 Thing From Another World only covered the first third of the short novel, Who Goes There? So I can enjoy both movies without worrying which is better.
I think as a rule, talkie remakes are better than the silent originals. I'm thinking of movies like Frankenstein and The Ten Commandments, and the previously mentioned Ben Hur.
I think the 1951 Disney Alice in Wonderland cartoon is better than the grotesque 1931 live action original with the likes of Gary Cooper and Cary Grant.

I wouldn’t say better because some are worse. But some give a different view than the first one. Like IT, I loved the mini series so much I was obsessed with it as a teen. I watched it weekly for awhile. I wouldn’t say the newest is a full remake though. But the newest one was great too. I loved it so much I saw it twice in theaters and I have never done that before.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) was very good, on equal footing with the original. These were all better: The Fly (1986) The Thing (1982) The Last House On The Left (2009) Scarface (1983) The Hills Have Eyes (2006) Hairspray (2007) Man On Fire (2004) The Blob (1988) Really? I have read so many hated the remake of House On The Left. I almost didn’t see it. I have seen the original once and it was disturbing enough! I thought the remake was no where as disturbing as the first. I also like the original Hills Have Eyes better. But there is no right or wrong to this. We all have our own likes and dislikes.

The Fly > The Fly
The Dark Knight > Batman
Gladiator > Fall of the Roman Empire
The Thing > The Thing From Another World

The Wizard of Oz (1939) IS a REHASH that's said to be FAR SUPERIOR to the original. That's a remake?

There's lots, several which have been mentioned. The Crazies, It, Dracula (the Oldman version), the new Apes trilogy, War of the Worlds.
