Easily, I'd say. It's beyond incoherent. What the hell was Boorman thinking? Absolutely nothing makes sense or is worth sitting through. The scenes in the clinic with the headbands are beyond risible.

It was an enormous misfire. It's often hard to believe that the screenplay was approved and the green light given to go ahead shooting. Especially given the huge expectations that would have awaited this following the phenomenal impact that the original had around the globe.
If the first movie had been some semi-obscure independent low budgeter, then this would probably still have been a bizarre, confusing disappointment..........but as a follow up to a big studio box office smash and a genre-defining landmark, it is a genuinely inexplicable disaster.
Would have benefited from some involvement from William Peter Blatty.

The events of The Exorcist TV series seemed to have rendered the events from Exorcist II from canon.

Boorman tried to put his stamp on it, and the worst thing he could've done was make the film into a kind of dreamy fantasy.
As for continuity, the voice of the demon was completely different, and so was the make-up. I read somewhere that it wasn't even Linda Blair, but some unnamed actress. Awful. The musical score was terrible, too, and Burton--who I usually like--just seemed so uncomfortable and stiff.

I agree, Exorcist II: The Heretic is a worthy candidate for any Top 5 worst movie list. So embarrassingly bad and completely laughable.

I listed Exorcist II on a recent thread asking for films we love that are usually dismissed. So no, I'd definitely not put it on a list of bad films.
My least favorite Exorcist film is the first one.

Never saw it but from what I have seen from clips on Youtube and reviews, it sounds like one of those movies the studio should have kept a closer eye on during the production.

That's interesting Terrapin. While I wouldn't rate the first as one of my favourite horror films, it is still a strong and even powerful cinematic experience....something E II wasn't. I would prefer to watch III the most, out of all of them. That too is an interesting choice. Don't get me wrong. I love the EIII and as I mentioned previously, it's very underrated, superbly directed by Blatty himself and by far the best entry out of all the sequels and prequels of the entire Exorcist film series but it's so grounded and connected to the original movie with the same cop, Kinderman and same surviving priests from the first movie.

I mean, it's going along bad enough and then we have James Earl Jones saying "I will spit a leopard." Um, wat?

This sequel is a snore, but sort of interesting in a " How Not To Do a Sequel" kinda way. Speaking of Exorcist III, did anyone else see the finale of the TV series season two do a homage to that infamous jump scare with the nurse and the statue? SO GOOOD!

Yeah, I agree it's one of the worst movies ever made.
For me Exorcist II also rates as the worst sequel to a great film ever. Yes, worse than Highlander 2. Worse than Batman & Robin. And much worse than Robocop 3, Speed 2 and Godfather III.
It has none of the memorable characters, great scares and suspense of the original and worst of all, it's boring.

I own it on DVD, but I never even finished watching it. Ever since, I've never came across it again, or any of the other ones, and I really wanna see Part III. I mean, you'd think a sequel with the return of the lead actress would get at least some appreciation for that, but no.
