Leave "Mike vs. Joel" at the door.
So in a not too distant past, sometime A.D. There was a guy named Joel, not too different from you or me. He worked for a couple of guys named Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank. He did a good job, but his bosses didn't like him, so they shot him into space. They made him watch bad B-Grade movies in an experiment to see which film would be bad enough to break his spirit. Then they'd air the film all around the world, turning its inhabitants into drooling morons they could rule. So Joel sat heckled his way through the films with robots he made out of the parts he could have used to Fast Forward or Remind the films. He eventually escaped. So they sent his replacement Mike up next and he was the token human aboard the Satellite of Love for the remainder of the series.
The show lasted for 11 years on the air and even had a movie. Any Misties here?

Yes.
They're currently running episodes on CometTV every Sunday evening. Unfortunately, they have only about 10 episodes.

Love this show, I also enjoy Rifftrax by the way. I was first introduced to this when I saw the end credits of the movie on a movie channel we had at home. It was hilarious, so the next time they showed it I watched the whole movie. After that I found out it was a tv show. One of my favourites is the Soultaker episode.

Another Mistie here. Discovered this show on Comedy Central in the early 90's. My first episode was The Human Duplicators. Not too long after that I saw my all-time favorite episode, The Day the Earth Froze with the short, Here Comes the Circus. After that I was hooked for life, and I corrupted my husband, sister and two brothers with this show.

The episodes I enjoyed the best were the ones that riffed on halfway decent movies that fell just short of greatness. These types of films were rewatchable for me because I could enjoy the films and the funny comments too. The Hercules films were enjoyable in their own right. Fire Maidens of Outer Space ended up being one of my favorites because of Timmy and Borodin. That movie needed all the help it could get to keep me awake all the way through. Daddy-O had catchy music in it (thanks John Williams!). Bert I. Gordon and Roger Corman had some good ones as well. Coleman Francis' films, on the other hand, were painful to watch.

Coleman Francis, a man who hated humanity so much he made terrible films about his contempt for us.

Coleman Francis, a man who hated humanity so much he made terrible films about his contempt for us. Yeah, there is a great doctoral thesis just waiting to be written about him. A psychology thesis titled "Coleman Francis: What Was He Thinking?"

I think a few people have written about him, actually.

I imagine there have been times the guys found their jobs particularly difficult due to what they were watching. I love MST3K for the riffs which those awful movies deserve since they don't deserve any other kind of other human response, which of course is the point of the show. But without a doubt, the choice of This Island Earth for the MST3K movie was due to the producers feeling that a better than simply awful movie needed to be riffed since a non-regular MST3K audience would need to be attracted to theaters. Unfortunately, that ploy didn't work very well since Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie grossed about twelve dollars at the box office.

I'm a Mistie as well. I own several volumes of MST3K on DVD.
Last month I was at a Science Fiction Marathon and they showed "Hercules Against the Moon Men" as a surprise film. Since this is one of the episodes I have on DVD, I shouted out some of the more memorable riffs at the appropriate times during the film.

A few films they aired could be called "Deep hurting! Deep hurting!" I know their focus was mostly to air the fun, goofy "best of the worst" bad movies for purposes of keeping the show watchable and tolerable, but boy a few things slipped through the cracks.

Personally, I have a hard time making it through "Invasion of the Neptune Men". It's so boring to me, even with Mike and the Bots. "The Castle of Fu Manchu" almost defeated my cousin's attempt to watch it. It took several tries, but he made it. He still wonders what was going on in that movie.

The friend who turned me onto the show in the first place told me that it's common for someone not to be able to deal with it the first time, so to keep watching. The second time I fell in love with the show...but not the movie the show was riffing!!!

I just received Vol. 24 in the mail yesterday. It has "Fugitive Alien I and II", "The Sword and the Dragon", and "Samson vs. the Vampire Women". I love all 4 of these episodes. My husband and I watched Samson last night. Does anyone else think that the father in "Samson vs. the Vampire Women" looks like Ian McKellen?
