A former friend once said that The Bridge over the Rive Kwai was boring, and when I asked her to name a great war picture she though was good she said Rambo - First Blood II 1985, and that was the end of that relationship. (Sorry, a little personal reflection) The first draft of 'Rambo II' by James Cameron gave Rambo a sidekick and John Travolta was the desired choice to play him. When Sylvester Stallone took over writing duties it was one of several Cameron ideas that bit the dust. wow!

When I began my teaching career a long long time ago, the department chairman was a transplanted Brit who was a 'Tommy' in the English army as a teenager in the late 1950s. He told me that while he was stationed in Burma, he and several members of his unit were commandeered to Ceylon to serve as extras in KWAI.
The scene he appears in occurs at the start of the picture's second half at the Mount Lavinia Hospital where Holden's character is recuperating. Jack Hawkins approaches a nurse to inquire where an American named 'Shears' can be found. As they part, another nurse is assisting a young British soldier who is heavily bandaged and limping.
I looked for a copy of the film in the local library's video collection. Sure enough, that limping extra was my department's boss, all right.

On the making of Rambo, Gale Anne Hurd said Stallone kept forgetting James Cameron's name which didn't help their working relationship.
